Ukrainian President Zelenskiy Accuses Russia of Targeting Energy Sector in Missile Attack

President Zelenskiy Calls for International Support

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has accused Russia of launching a missile attack targeting Ukraine's energy sector, specifically gas facilities crucial for supplying gas to the European Union. The attack, which occurred on Saturday, has escalated tensions between the two countries and raised concerns about the stability of gas supply to the EU.

Russian Aggression and Targeted Attack

According to President Zelenskiy, the Russian attack aimed to disrupt Ukraine's energy infrastructure, including electricity and gas transit facilities essential for the safe delivery of gas to the EU. The timing of the attack raises alarm, considering the impending expiration of the transit deal between Russia's Gazprom and Ukraine, which facilitates gas supply to the EU via Ukrainian territory.

Response and Defensive Measures

Despite the attack, Zelenskiy asserted that Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted some of the Russian missiles, demonstrating their capability to defend against such aggression. However, the president reiterated his plea for defensive weapons systems from international partners, emphasizing the need for Patriot missile systems to enhance Ukraine's defensive capabilities against future attacks.

Impact and Damage Assessment

While Ukrainian authorities confirmed the attack on energy facilities, including those operated by the state-run oil and gas firm Naftogaz, they assured that no injuries occurred, and gas supplies to consumers and clients remained unaffected. However, reports indicate damage to critical energy infrastructure objects in the Lviv region, bordering Poland, due to strikes by cruise missiles and Kinzhal hypersonic missiles.

Call for International Support

In light of the escalating tensions and continued aggression from Russia, President Zelenskiy reiterated Ukraine's plea for support from the international community. The provision of defensive weapons systems, particularly Patriot missiles, is deemed crucial in enhancing Ukraine's ability to deter future attacks and safeguard its sovereignty.
