ATLANTA — R&B legend Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas is officially on the defensive. The TLC singer found herself at the center of a social media firestorm this week after public Federal Election Commission (FEC) records revealed she made multiple donations to committees linked to Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign.

In a series of emotional statements shared on Instagram, the "No Scrubs" singer, 55, categorically denied being a supporter of the MAGA movement, claiming the contributions were the result of an "honest mistake" involving automatic recurring payments and a lack of due diligence.

The controversy ignited when filings surfaced showing that a "Rozonda Thomas" from Stone Mountain, Georgia, made 17 separate donations between April and November 2024. The contributions, totaling approximately $900, were directed to entities including WinRed, the Trump National Committee JFC, and Never Surrender Inc., as well as campaigns for Senator Ted Cruz.

While the individual amounts were relatively small—ranging from $3.50 to $180—the sheer number of transactions led many fans to believe the singer was a covert supporter of the Republican platform.

Taking to Instagram to "set the record straight," Chilli explained that she believed her money was going toward specific social causes rather than a political candidate.

“I want to be clear: I am not MAGA and I do not support policies that cause harm to the American people,” Chilli wrote. “I made a mistake that too many make: I did not read the fine print. I thought I was supporting causes against human trafficking and for veterans—two things I care deeply about because my dad is a veteran and I love children.”

 

 

A representative for the singer echoed this, stating that the donations were set up as recurring payments and that Chilli was "bamboozled" by the way the fundraising platform was branded.

The donor backlash was intensified by a separate incident involving a controversial social media repost. Fans noticed that Chilli’s account had shared a "transphobic conspiracy theory" post targeting former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Chilli addressed this head-on, describing herself as "not very computer savvy" and claiming her thumb accidentally hit the repost button while she was scrolling.

While critics like Uncle Luke (Luther Campbell) have called the singer out for "turning her back" on her audience, some free speech advocates are coming to her defense. The Institute for Free Speech noted that the weaponization of "minor" donations—often under $1,000—highlights the dangers of modern disclosure laws.

“Treating a modest set of personal contributions as a matter of public scandal creates a chilling effect,” said Tiffany Donnelly of the Institute. “People think twice before giving because they fear the professional and social retaliation we are seeing here.”

Despite the digital uproar, Chilli appears focused on her professional commitments. TLC is currently preparing for their massive summer “It’s Iconic” Tour alongside Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue, which kicks off next month.
