‘A Recentering and a Rebirth’: Kehlani Celebrates Birthday with All-Star Self-Titled Album
OAKLAND — To mark their 31st birthday, R&B trailblazer Kehlani has gifted fans with their most ambitious and personal project to date. The self-titled fifth studio album, KEHLANI, arrived on streaming services at midnight on Friday, featuring a "hall of fame" list of collaborators that spans generations of hip-hop and soul.
The 17-track LP, released via Atlantic Records, serves as a definitive statement of artistic identity. After taking home two Grammy Awards earlier this year for the lead single "Folded", Kehlani has leaned heavily into the 90s and 00s sounds that defined their youth, recruiting the very icons who inspired them.
The ‘Legacy’ Collaborators
The album’s feature list reads like a dream festival lineup. Kehlani has successfully bridged the gap between modern R&B and the genre's golden eras:
-
Missy Elliott: Appears on the high-energy single “Back and Forth,” a collaboration Kehlani described as a "lifelong dream" realized.
-
Brandy: Joins for the soul-stirring “I Need You,” a track already being hailed by critics as a masterclass in vocal harmony.
-
Usher: Lends his legendary smooth vocals to the track “Shoulda Never.”
-
Clipse: The reunited duo of Pusha T and No Malice deliver a gritty edge to “No Such Thing.”
The project also features appearances from Cardi B on the track “Pocket,” alongside Lil Wayne, T-Pain, Lil Jon, Big Sean, and Leon Thomas.
A ‘Soul-Baring’ Rebirth
In a statement shared alongside the release, Kehlani explained why they chose this specific moment for a self-titled project.
“I decided to name this album Kehlani because it just felt like all the roads in my life were leading to me just putting my foot down and stamping this time period,” they said. “It feels like a rebirth, but also like a recentering and a refocus. It’s the most ‘me’ I’ve ever been.”
The album’s sonic palette is executive produced by Khris Riddick-Tynes and leans into live instrumentation, lush arrangements, and the "yearning" lyricism that has become Kehlani's signature.

The ‘Folded’ Momentum
The rollout for KEHLANI has been one of the most successful in the artist's career. The lead single “Folded” dominated urban radio in late 2025, earning the singer their first solo No. 1 on that chart and a Top 10 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
Building on that momentum, the subsequent singles “Out The Window” and the Missy Elliott-assisted “Back and Forth” have ensured that Kehlani remains the dominant force in contemporary R&B leading into the summer festival season.
The Road Ahead
With the album now in the hands of the "Baelani" faithful, the singer is preparing for a string of high-profile live dates. Kehlani is set to headline the 2026 Roots Picnic in Philadelphia this June, followed by a much-anticipated performance at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans.
As the industry reflects on a project that manages to be both a star-studded spectacle and an intimate diary, one thing is clear: Kehlani has officially stamped their name on the R&B history books.
KEHLANI is available now on all major streaming platforms.
