Footage shows moment officers are stabbed in ambush

The King's Commendation for Bravery has been given to a police sergeant who jumped to the aid of a colleague who was shot by a knifeman. After he held a sword to the neck of his colleague Sgt Marc Foster, Sg. Tim Ansell fought with 27-year-old Jacob Brown. After a road collision in Whalley Range in July 2023, Brown launched his assault as the Greater Manchester Police officers and their colleague, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, were speaking with a driver. Brown stabbed and slashed both Sgt Ansell and Sgm Foster before PC Wolstencroft stunned him with a Taser.

Brown, who was dressed in black with a hoodie, ran up to Sgt Foster from behind with a knife outstretched, according to a bodyworn and dashboard camera video taken by the police. Despite being repeatedly struck with the knife, he collided with the officer who staggered and collapsed to the ground before Sgt Ansell jumped in and wrestled him to the floor.

PC Wolstencroft drew his Taser and waited for a good shot, bringing the game to an end. After Brown collapsed to the ground, the constable was heard to say officer stabbed over his radio. I can't get something on my neck here, Sgt Ansell says, after being stabbed in the chest.

Sgt Ansell sustained two open wounds in his neck and further wounds to his arms and body, while Sgt. Foster suffered from slash wounds. Before paramedics arrived, Sgt Foster used his naked hands to stem his colleague's bleeding. The new awards came after the three officers received their own Bravery Awards in October 2023 and the John Egerton Bravery Award from the Police Federation's GMP branch in April 2024. In July 2024, they were also named recipients of the North West Bravery Award.
The actions of all three officers ultimately saved each other and ensured that no members of the public were injured," GMP said in a tweet. Brown was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order in April 2024, according to GMP.
