‘Tyler Rake Lives’: Extraction 3 Officially a Go for Summer Filming as Hemsworth and Elba Close Deals
LOS ANGELES — Netflix has officially greenlit the third chapter of its record-breaking action franchise, Extraction. In a major announcement on Wednesday 8th April the streaming giant confirmed that Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba have finalized deals to reunite for the threequel, with principal photography scheduled to begin this summer.
The news follows months of speculation regarding the "unfinished business" between Hemsworth’s indestructible mercenary, Tyler Rake, and Elba’s mysterious operative, Alcott, who was first introduced in the final moments of 2023’s Extraction 2.
The Team Reassembles
Stuntman-turned-director Sam Hargrave is set to return to the director’s chair, ensuring the franchise’s signature "oner" action sequences remain a central draw. While Joe Russo penned the first two installments, the script for Extraction 3 will be handled by David Weil (Citadel, Hunters), marking a creative shift as the "Extraction Universe" expands.
Joining Hemsworth and Elba is returning fan-favorite Golshifteh Farahani, reprising her role as Nik Khan.
“It is our privilege to continue the creative collaboration with this outstanding team,” said Angela Russo-Otstot, Chief Creative Officer at AGBO. “The Extraction franchise has proven itself a true standout for global audiences, and we are excited to expand this universe further.”
Production Logistics: From Sydney to Europe
Production is slated to kick off in June 2026, primarily filming on location in Sydney, Australia, and various parts of Europe. The summer start date was strategically chosen to follow the completion of Hemsworth’s work on the crime thriller Kockroach, which begins filming later this month.

A Massive Franchise Expansion
The announcement of Extraction 3 is just one piece of Netflix's aggressive "Extraction Universe" roadmap. The streamer is currently deep in production on several related projects designed to keep the momentum high between major film releases.
-
Tygo: A spinoff film set in South Korea starring Don Lee and Lalisa Manobal (Lisa from BLACKPINK), currently in production.
-
Mercenary: An Extraction Series: An original series led by Omar Sy, which recently wrapped filming and is expected to debut late this year.
The Cliffhanger Payoff
While plot details for the third film remain classified, fans are expecting a direct payoff to the cliffhanger ending of the second movie. In that finale, Elba’s Alcott offered Rake and Nik a way out of a high-security prison—provided they agreed to work for his shadowy, powerful boss.
Joe Russo previously teased the chemistry between the two leads at New York Comic Con, promising that fans who enjoyed the "brief but electric" interaction between Elba and Hemsworth would see that dynamic take center stage in the new film.
With the first two films currently sitting on Netflix’s "Most Popular English Films" list with a combined 265 million views, Extraction 3 is poised to be one of the biggest streaming events of 2027.
