BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards Introduce Public Vote for Team of the Year Award

BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards Introduce Public Vote for Team of the Year Award

The 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) awards are just around the corner, and excitement is building as the ceremony prepares to celebrate a year filled with extraordinary sporting achievements. The event will be held live from MediaCityUK in Salford on Thursday, December 18, starting at 19:00 GMT, and will be broadcast on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, and the BBC Sport website and app.

This year’s show will be hosted by Gabby Logan, Alex Scott, and Clare Balding, who will guide audiences through an evening of celebration and reflection on some of the most dramatic and inspiring moments in sport from 2025. "This year has once again been packed full of amazing sporting moments and stories. I'm glad it's not me having to pick who to vote for!" said Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport, reflecting on a year filled with triumphs, from the Lionesses’ triumph in the Women's Euros to England’s victory at the Women's Rugby World Cup and Liverpool's Premier League title.

A key change to this year’s event is the introduction of a public vote for the Team of the Year award. Previously decided by a panel of experts, this category will now be decided by viewers at home, making it even more interactive.

The ceremony will also feature the announcement of seven prestigious awards: the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, World Sport Star of the Year, Helen Rollason award, Young Sports Personality of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, and the Lifetime Achievement Award. The shortlists for the awards will be revealed in December, with voting for World Sport Star of the Year already open to the public via the BBC website.

The 2025 SPOTY awards promise to deliver an exciting night of sporting celebration and anticipation. With public voting for both the Sports Personality of the Year and the Team of the Year, there’s plenty of opportunity for fans to engage with the event and have their say on who should take home the coveted titles. The evening will be a reminder of the incredible achievements of athletes and teams across the world, and a celebration of the sport that unites millions.
