The US Government Might Break Up Google
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) plans on breaking up Google. This idea came up after the courts ruled that Google had been using its power unfairly to maintain its lead in the search market.
Google is a large company that does lots of things. It runs the Android operating system on many smartphones, the Chrome web browser which many people use to browse the internet and also it makes a lot of money from ads through its AdWords network. The DOJ is considering forcing Google to sell off some of these parts in order to level the competition for other companies.
Another option the DOJ is thinking about is making Google share some of its data with other companies. This could help smaller companies compete better with Google.
This is important because it has the ability to change how the internet works. Google is very powerful and if the DOJ decides to break it up it may make it easier for other companies to expand.
