Iliad's €3 Billion Commitment to Advancing AI Infrastructure in Europe

Iliad's €3 Billion Commitment to Advancing AI Infrastructure in Europe

In a strategic move to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities across Europe, French telecom giant Iliad has announced a comprehensive €3 billion investment. This initiative aims to strengthen the company's AI infrastructure, encompassing data centres, computing power, research, and application development.

Strategic Focus and Expansion Plans

The investment will be managed by Iliad's subsidiary, OpCore, which currently operates 13 data centres across Europe. In the immediate future, OpCore plans to deploy several hundred megawatts of capacity, with a long-term vision to expand this to several gigawatts. This ambitious expansion is designed to support advanced AI applications and drive innovation across various sectors.

Exclusive Partnership with Mistral AI

As part of its AI strategy, Iliad, through its subsidiary Free, has entered into a unique partnership with French AI firm Mistral AI. This collaboration introduces "Chat Pro," a premium AI assistant, exclusively to Free's 15.5 million mobile subscribers in France for a 12-month period. This initiative positions Free as the first operator in the country to offer such an advanced AI-driven service, enhancing user experience and engagement.

Enhancing Europe's AI Competitiveness

Europe has historically lagged behind the United States and China in AI development. Iliad's substantial investment seeks to bridge this gap by bolstering the continent's AI infrastructure and fostering a robust ecosystem for innovation. By enhancing data centre capacity and computing power, Iliad aims to position Europe as a formidable player in the global AI arena.

Alignment with the AI Action Summit

The announcement of this investment comes ahead of the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in Paris, a gathering of global leaders, technology executives, and policymakers dedicated to discussing AI governance and development. Iliad's commitment aligns with the summit's objectives, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing AI technologies responsibly and effectively.

Conclusion

Iliad's €3 billion investment marks a significant milestone in Europe's AI journey. By focusing on expanding data centre capacity, enhancing computing power, and fostering innovative partnerships, Iliad is not only advancing its technological capabilities but also contributing to Europe's broader goal of becoming a leader in artificial intelligence. This strategic move is poised to drive innovation, support the development of new AI applications, and deliver substantial benefits to consumers and industries across the continent.
