‘Vought Rising’: Jensen Ackles Confirms 2027 Release Window for Highly Anticipated Prequel
CULVER CITY, CA — As the world prepares for the final stand of the "Boys" against Homelander later this week, the future of the Vought Cinematic Universe (VCU) has never looked clearer. In a major production update, Prime Video and series creator Eric Kripke have officially narrowed the release window for the prequel spinoff, Vought Rising.
Star Jensen Ackles, who reprises his fan-favorite role as the indestructible Soldier Boy, confirmed on Saturday, April 4, that principal photography on the first season has officially wrapped. However, fans will have to exercise a bit more patience: the series is now slated for an early 2027 debut on Prime Video.
The 1950s: Where It All Began
Set in the mid-1950s, Vought Rising is described as a "twisted murder mystery" that explores the early days of Vought International. The series follows the rise of Clara Vought (played by a returning Aya Cash, formerly known as Stormfront) and the exploits of Soldier Boy at the height of his Cold War fame.
Kripke addressed the 2027 timeline in a recent interview, citing the immense technical requirements of the show's period-accurate superhero action.
“We’re looking at about eight months just to finish the VFX,” Kripke told Collider. “We won’t even be done with the cut until November or December of this year. We want to ensure that the 1950s aesthetic feels as gritty and visceral as the flagship series.”
A Massive Year for ‘The Boys’ Franchise
The release update for Vought Rising comes at a pivotal moment for the franchise. Prime Video is currently managing three distinct storylines across its "Supes" universe, ensuring that even as the main series concludes, the brand remains a dominant force in streaming.
The Boys Universe - 2026-2027 Roadmap
| Project | Current Status | Release Date |
| The Boys (Season 5) | Final Season | 8th April 2026 |
| Gen V (Season 2) | Completed | 17th September 2025 (Available) |
| Vought Rising | Post-Production | Early 2027 |
| The Boys: Mexico | Development (Writing) | TBD (Late 2027/2028) |
The Final Countdown
The news of the 2027 prequel arrives just 72 hours before the global premiere of The Boys Season 5 on Wednesday 8th April. The final chapter of the main series will debut with two episodes, followed by weekly installments leading to a series finale on 20th May 2026.
Marketing for the final season has leaned heavily into "Homelander’s World," showing a United States under the total control of the Seven, with Hughie, Frenchie, and Mother’s Milk imprisoned in Vought-run "Freedom Camps."
The “Mexico” Mystery
While Vought Rising moves into the editing room, progress remains slow on the international spinoff, The Boys: Mexico. Executive produced by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, Kripke recently revealed that the pilot script is still being refined, suggesting that the franchise's first non-English language entry is likely a 2028 project.
With Jensen Ackles already teasing that Vought Rising is being planned for "multiple seasons," the "Soldier Boy" era is just beginning, even as the sun sets on Billy Butcher’s crew.
