‘Famous’ Architect arrested for serial killing

The ‘Ogre looking’ Architect, described by witnesses, was charged with three murders.

Rex Heuermann, 59, was arrested and charged with three of the Gilgo Beach murders. The investigations started over a decade ago, in 2010 when human remains were found on Gilgo Beach. The local authorities and investigations were looking for a potential serial killer, who was believed to be connected to 11 victims in total.

The initial investigations started with the report of a missing person, Shannan Gilbert from Oak Beach in 2010. The search in the hope to find Shannan has led to the horrific discovery of multiple different human remains in the area. The bodies were hidden in thick bush and sand all roughly in the same area.

In 2011 the murders continued, and the police discovered the remains of more women, alongside a toddler and a man.

The shocking crime discoveries have attracted media attention and Netflix created a film “Lost Girl,” released in 2020. The film pictures how Shannan’s mother is relentlessly fighting to find her daughter and her resilience to give up has led to a string of other truly gruesome crimes.

Shannan’s remains were only found in 2011 after discovering the bodies of Melissa Barthelemy (24), Megan Waterman (22), Amber Costello (27), Maureen Brainard-Barnes (25), Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack (24), a toddler and a man.

An early witness claimed to see the killer, described as an “Ogre” looking guy driving away from the crime location in a Chevrolet Avalanche. The investigation has pin-pointed the suspect to be from Long Island as, after Barthelemy’s disappearance, her phone was traced and showed records of the killer calling the victim’s sister. The same phone was appearing on the system located in Massapequa.

Rex Heuermann was placed into a secret investigation. All the clues were pointed at the 59-year-old well-known Architect, who was featured in YouTube talks and shows previously. The nearly 2 metres tall man fitted the witness description and his car was also a match to the Chevrolet Avalanche.

The undercover agents followed him around and retrieved a half-eaten pizza that Heuermann threw away in the pizza box into a public bin.

The DNA found on the pizza crust was a match with the hair found on the victim's remains.

Rex Heuermann was arrested in his family home, after the police raided the property on Thursday 13 July 2023. Police called him a “monster that walks among us,” and they urge the public to call confidential phone numbers if they have any information to help them in the investigation. Rex Heuermann was charged with three counts of murder to which he pleaded ‘not guilty.'
