Emergency services, including West Midlands Ambulance Service, were called to a home on Corporation Street at around 7.30 a.m. The two children were sadly pronounced dead at the scene. They have been named by police as two-year-old Meraj Ul Zahra and three-year-old Abdul Momin Alfaateh.

A woman from the Stafford area has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody. The children's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers. A police cordon remains in place at the property.

Detective Inspector Kirsty Oldfield said, "We are working hard to understand more about what happened leading up to these two children tragically losing their lives. We ask that people do not speculate at this stage because it is distressing for family and friends and could hinder our inquiries." She added that police do not believe there is a wider threat to the public.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service stated, "On arrival of ambulance staff we discovered two patients, both children. Sadly, it quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save them and they were confirmed dead at the scene."

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as is routine when there has been prior police contact.

Anyone with information that could assist with the investigation is encouraged to contact Staffordshire Police by calling 101, using the Live Chat feature on their website, or by calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
