‘Targeting Back-to-School’: Warner Bros. Delays Batman & Robin Spin-off Dynamic Duo to Autumn 2028
LOS ANGELES — Warner Bros. and DC Studios have officially reshuffled their theatrical release calendar, delaying the highly anticipated Batman universe animated spin-off Dynamic Duo from summer to autumn 2028.
Originally slated to open on 30th June 2028, the ambitious feature film, which centers on the origin stories of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, has been moved back nearly three months to a new release date of 22nd September 2028.
According to studio sources, the distribution shift was made strategically to position the feature as a prime "back-to-school" title. Warner Bros. executives believe the late-September slot will allow the film to capture both primary school audiences alongside older secondary and university demographics, drawing parallels to the target audience of Sony's blockbuster Spider-Verse franchise.
A Hybrid Blend of Puppetry and CGI
First greenlit by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran alongside Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, Dynamic Duo promises a visually distinct approach to Gotham City's mythos.
The project marks the feature debut of New Orleans-based animation studio Swaybox, led by director Arthur Mintz. The film utilizes a novel hybrid production technique combining real-world puppetry, stop-motion aesthetics, and cutting-edge CGI visual effects.
Written by Matthew Aldrich (Coco, Lightyear), the narrative traces the early friendship and professional rivalry between Grayson and Todd long before they inherited their respective superhero and anti-hero identities as Nightwing and Red Hood.
"This is something truly special," DC Studios chief James Gunn previously remarked when unveiling the project. "A story of the Robins... a mix of animation, puppetry, and CGI from the visionary Swaybox, produced with our partners at Matt Reeves' 6th & Idaho."
Star-Studded Voice Cast
The date shift follows recent industry reports revealing an impressive voice ensemble attached to the animated feature.
Rising star Mason Thames (The Black Phone, How to Train Your Dragon) is set to voice Dick Grayson, starring alongside Logan Kim (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) as Jason Todd. Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy) and veteran character actor Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire) have also joined the cast as Red Hood One and Red Hood Two respectively.
The film is being produced jointly by DC Studios, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, and Matt Reeves' 6th & Idaho production banner.
A Busy Era for the Dark Knight
The calendar change moves Dynamic Duo away from a crowded summer 2028 corridor, placing it several months after Matt Reeves’ live-action sequel The Batman Part II, which is scheduled for theatrical release on 18th February 2028.
The announcement was accompanied by wider release schedule adjustments across Warner Bros.' slate, including shifting Chris Columbus' Gremlins 3 from November 2027 to October 2028.
With animation production continuing at Swaybox Studios, comic book fans can expect further official character reveals and footage previews as the 2028 theatrical window draws closer.
