UK Produces Over a Million Vehicles in 2023

In a significant milestone for the UK automotive industry, over a million vehicles were manufactured in the country in 2023, according to data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The figures, representing a remarkable 17% growth compared to 2022, showcase the resilience of the industry amid challenges such as the global chip shortage and pandemic-related disruptions.

Of the total vehicles produced, more than 905,000 were cars, and over 120,000 were commercial vehicles. The positive trend is attributed to the alleviation of the challenges posed by the pandemic and the chip shortage. Additionally, a substantial £23.7 billion investment in electrification has played a pivotal role in driving growth, creating job opportunities nationwide, and significantly boosting electric vehicle (EV) production, which accounted for an impressive 38.3% of the overall output.

According to the SMMT, Europe stands as the UK's largest customer, accounting for 60.3% of exports. Notably, Turkey has emerged as an unexpected player, becoming the fourth-largest customer with a remarkable 223.8% increase in exports.

Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the SMMT, highlighted the positive outlook for the industry, stating, "Receding supply chain challenges, new model introductions, and a massive £23.7 billion of investment put UK vehicle production firmly back on track in 2023. Industry focus will now shift towards delivering these commitments, accelerating the sector's transition to electric, and scaling up the supply chain."

The record-breaking production numbers signify a resurgence in the UK's automotive sector, positioning it for a robust future as it embraces electrification and addresses the challenges posed by a rapidly evolving global landscape.
