Love and Extraterrestrials: Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez Team Up for Illumination’s ‘Not Alone’
ANNECY — In a major casting coup that has completely disrupted the animation landscape, Hollywood titans Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez have officially signed on to lead Not Alone, a high-profile, original intergalactic romantic comedy from Universal Pictures and Illumination.
The surprise project was formally unveiled on Monday 22nd June, during a presentation at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, complete with the debut of the movie's first official teaser poster. Chalamet had playfully set the internet alight 24 hours earlier, taking to his personal Instagram account to tease a major space-themed movie announcement.
The feature marks a critical career milestone for the 30-year-old Dune actor, serving as Chalamet’s first leading role in a feature-length animated movie. The project also functions as a highly anticipated vocal reunion for Chalamet and Gomez, who previously shared the screen nearly a decade ago in Woody Allen’s 2019 romantic comedy A Rainy Day in New York.
Sparks, Rockets, and Interplanetary Fugitives
According to the official studio plot summary, Not Alone blends sweet human connection with unhinged, classic Illumination physical comedy.
Chalamet lends his vocal talents to Joe, described as an "introverted rocket mechanic who lives a quiet life alone." His peaceful isolation is upended when he crosses paths with Fran (voiced by Gomez), a "brilliant astro-botanist who is developing the world's first-ever plant-fueled rocket."
Brought together to prepare for the monumental, history-making launch of Fran's eco-spacecraft, there are immediate romantic sparks between the two intellectual eccentrics, though neither character is particularly adept at navigating human relationships.
However, any hope of a conventional courtship is thrown into absolute chaos when three tiny, chaotic, and unruly alien fugitives, named Dunk, Welly, and Shirm, unexpectedly crash-land on Earth and take secret refuge directly inside Joe’s home.
On the run across the cosmos from an overzealous but remarkably bumbling intergalactic law enforcement officer, the extraterrestrial trio quickly deduce that Fran’s experimental plant-powered vessel is their golden ticket back home to safety.
An Elite British and American Ensemble Cast
To flesh out the film's broad comedic universe, Illumination has assembled a stellar supporting cast heavily populated by elite British television stars and Academy Award-winning American talent.
The core alien trio will be brought to life by a powerhouse British comedy lineup consisting of Rob Brydon (Gavin & Stacey), Diane Morgan (Cunk on Earth), and Jamie Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats).
Meanwhile, Ted Lasso favorite Brett Goldstein will swap his football boots for a space badge to voice the film's primary antagonist, Officer Zandro. Oscar winner Allison Janney and New Girl star Lamorne Morris round out the elite voice roster in undisclosed supporting roles.

The Illumination Hit Machine
Behind the scenes, the production is being steered by an experienced triumvirate of Illumination veterans. Not Alone will be co-directed by Eric Guillon (co-director of Despicable Me 3 and the original visual character designer of the Minions), Claire Dodgson (editor of The Lorax), and Jonathan Del Val (co-director of Minions: The Rise of Gru).
The project is spearheaded by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri, with celebrated British romantic-comedy auteur Richard Curtis (Love Actually, About Time) attached as an executive producer, hinting at a significantly elevated, heartwarming narrative depth.
The film joins an incredibly robust pipeline for the animation studio, which is currently enjoying a golden run following the massive box office numbers generated by The Super Mario Bros. Movie and its newly released summer feature, Minions & Monsters.
Universal Pictures has officially locked in the global theatrical release date for Not Alone for Friday 16th April 2027. With its stellar A-list leads, top-tier British comedy supporting cast, and a script combining cosmic sci-fi with grounded human romance, the project is already tracking to be one of the most commercially dominant cinematic events of the spring 2027 box office window.
