Three Arrested as $6.9M Stolen Bitcoin Mining Gear Recovered

Three men have  apprehended and are facing charges of receiving stolen property after authorities successfully recovered nearly $7 million worth of stolen Bitcoin mining computers in Southern California. The operation, carried out by detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's Commercial Crimes Division’s Cargo Theft Unit, resulted in a significant breakthrough in combating cryptocurrency-related theft.

 

The Arrest:


On March 19, the LAPD's Cargo Theft Unit executed the arrest of the three suspects at an undisclosed location. Identified as 47-year-old Vardan Vardanyan, 36-year-old Vagarshak Vardanyan, and 34-year-old Samvel Pilovan, the individuals  found in possession of 608 Bitcoin mining machines valued at $6.9 million.

 

Bitcoin Mining and Its Evolution:


Bitcoin mining, once feasible with personal computers, has evolved into a sophisticated process requiring specialized equipment, such as application-specific integrated circuit computers (ASICs). As Bitcoin's value surged over the years,  the competition for mining rewards, leading to an industry now dominated by those with access to powerful ASICs housed in warehouses.

 

The Investigation Continues:


While the LAPD did not specify the exact nature of the recovered mining computers, the breakthrough underscores ongoing efforts to combat cryptocurrency-related crimes.
