CD Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel has died at the age of 30 after suffering severe injuries during a Spanish second-division match against FC Andorra on Monday evening.
The incident occurred seven minutes into stoppage time with the score tied 2-2 at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López. FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his penalty box toward the center circle to clear a long ball, colliding heavily with De Miguel. The impact inflicted head and chest trauma on the forward, who suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated by paramedics in the ambulance en route to the hospital.
Although initially described as stable, his condition deteriorated neurologically overnight. Tenerife officially confirmed his death on Tuesday morning:
"Broken with pain, with a lump in our throat and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we announce the tragic passing of Jesús de Miguel Alameda this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m."
"There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can ease this profound sense of sadness. We stand with his devastated family, with his loved ones, and with the entire Tenerife football community, who today mourn this cruel turn of events."
"The family of Jesús de Miguel would like to thank everyone for their expressions of support and, from the bottom of their hearts, ask that their privacy be respected at this terrible time."
De Miguel, born in Madrid, scored 11 goals in 29 appearances for Tenerife after joining in 2025 following a successful spell at CD Castellón. He is survived by his young daughter, Carla.
Spanish National Police and judicial authorities in the Canary Islands have opened a formal investigation for potential involuntary manslaughter. Officials noted that under Spanish law, any non-natural death automatically initiates a standard judicial inquiry.
Monday's match was abandoned immediately following the incident as medical teams rushed onto the field. Owono was shown a straight red card for excessive force before joining players from both squads in checking on De Miguel's condition. The goalkeeper has since deactivated his social media accounts.
Opponents FC Andorra released a statement offering condolences:
"With heavy hearts and devastated, we would like to send our most sincere condolences to the family of Jesús de Miguel, to all his colleagues and friends, and to CD Tenerife."
Andorra co-owner and former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué added:
"I am sorry with all my soul. Rest in peace, Jesus."
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) suspended all scheduled domestic matches on Tuesday, including men's Copa del Rey and women's Copa de la Reina fixtures, and canceled upcoming national team promotional events:
"Following the confirmation of the death of Jesús de Miguel, a player for CD Tenerife, and as a mark of respect and solidarity, the RFEF announces the postponement of the matches scheduled for Tuesday ... corresponding to the first and third rounds of the Copa del Rey and the Copa de la Reina, respectively…"
"...The entire Spanish football family stands united in grief following this tragic loss and extends its deepest condolences, love and support to the family, friends and loved ones of Jesús de Miguel, as well as to everyone at CD Tenerife and its supporters during these extremely difficult times."
European governing body UEFA announced that a moment of silence will precede all European competition matches this week. UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin stated:
"We are heartbroken by the death of Jesús de Miguel Alameda. We have searched for words and found only silence. In that silence, our hearts and thoughts are with his family, his team-mates, everyone at Tenerife, and all those who mourn this tragic loss."
Key figures and institutions across the sport expressed their sympathy:
