Syria Market Attack: Assad Forces Kill Two - White Helmets

The recent artillery attack by Syrian regime forces on the central market of Idlib city resulted in tragic civilian casualties, highlighting the ongoing conflict's devastating impact on innocent lives. The assault led to the loss of two lives, including that of a child, and left 16 others injured, including four children, according to the Syria Civil Defense.

Ismail al-Hassan, head of the emergency department at Idlib University Hospital, described the influx of casualties and the hospital's efforts to attend to those wounded in the attack. He underscored the consistent targeting of the area by the Assad regime, necessitating perpetual readiness to address injuries resulting from bombardments.

The Syrian Civil Defense, commonly known as the White Helmets, condemned the attack, emphasizing its apparent intent to cause maximum civilian harm. Ahmed Yazji, a board member of the organization, highlighted the repeated targeting of crucial sites like schools and hospitals by the Syrian regime and Russia, characterizing these assaults as acts of terrorism aimed at destabilizing the region.

Yazji also pointed out the alarming statistics regarding attacks on the Idlib region, documenting over 1,200 attacks since the beginning of 2023, including strikes on schools and displaced camps. The deliberate nature of these attacks underscores the regime's intent to disrupt stability and cause widespread devastation.

Idlib province, housing millions, including a significant number in internally displaced camps, remains a densely populated area and the last stronghold controlled by Syrian opposition fighters. The assault on the bustling market turned a vibrant commercial hub into a scene of chaos, bloodshed, and anguish, as Abdullah Aloush, a shop owner in the area, recounted the horrifying transformation from a lively market to a site of tragedy.

The incident stands as a stark reminder of the ongoing human toll of the conflict in Syria, particularly on innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.
