‘The Coin Has Flipped’: Sebastian Stan Confirms Harvey Dent Role in The Batman Part II
GOTHAM (via BURBANK) — In a move that brings one of Marvel’s most beloved stars into the dark heart of DC’s Gotham City, Sebastian Stan has finally broken his silence on his casting in Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated sequel, The Batman Part II.
After months of intense speculation and "leaked" training footage, the Thunderbolts* star confirmed on Wednesday that he will indeed be portraying Harvey Dent, the crusading District Attorney destined to become the tragic villain Two-Face. The news coincides with official reports from Deadline confirming that Scarlett Johansson has also joined the cast, reportedly as Dent’s wife, Gilda.
‘A Summer Experience Like No Other’
Speaking during a cryptic livestream with his personal trainer on Wednesday morning, Stan, 43, teased that his preparation for the role is reaching a "crazy" intensity.
“I’ve been training a lot for this ‘summer experience’ that’s about to happen,” Stan told viewers, referring to the film's June production start. “It’s just going to be so crazy. People have no idea what’s coming... I don't even mean to tease anything, but the script Matt [Reeves] and Mattson [Tomlin] have put together is mind-blowing.”
While Stan remained tight-lipped on whether he would physically transform into Two-Face in this instalment, his casting marks a significant "comic book crossover" for the actor who spent over a decade as the MCU's Bucky Barnes.
A ‘Long Halloween’ Influence?
The casting of both Stan as Harvey and Johansson as Gilda has sent the rumour mill into overdrive, with many fans suspecting that Reeves is adapting the seminal graphic novel Batman: The Long Halloween. In that story, the Dents’ relationship is central to a sprawling serial killer mystery that eventually leads to Harvey’s horrific scarring.

The ‘Tywin Lannister’ Connection
In another major update confirmed earlier this week, Game of Thrones veteran Charles Dance has joined the ensemble as Charles Dent, Harvey’s father. Insiders suggest that the sequel will explore Harvey’s troubled upbringing and the psychological fractures that eventually lead to his descent into villainy, adding a layer of Shakespearean tragedy to the noir thriller.
The Road to 2027
Director Matt Reeves has previously described the sequel as a "really different type of Batman movie" compared to the 2022 original. With production set to commence in the UK this June, the film is aiming for a release date of 1st October 2027.
For Stan, the role follows an acclaimed run of dramatic work, including his Oscar-nominated turn in The Apprentice. Stepping into the shoes previously filled by Aaron Eckhart and Billy Dee Williams, Stan is tasked with bringing a fresh, "visceral" energy to Gotham’s ill-fated hero.
As the "summer experience" begins, the question remains: will Sebastian Stan die a hero, or will we see him live long enough to become the villain by the time the credits roll?
