‘A Festive Gift’: Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans Celebrate Early Indian Release Date for Avengers: Doomsday
MUMBAI — Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios India have confirmed that the highly anticipated superhero ensemble Avengers: Doomsday will arrive in Indian cinemas on 17th December 2026, granting the country an exclusive 24-hour head start ahead of its North American theatrical release.
The announcement was unveiled alongside a special festive video message featuring Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. and former Captain America star Chris Evans, who reunited on screen to send a personal "Happy Diwali" greeting to Indian fans while celebrating the early release window.
The fifth instalment in the Avengers saga marks Downey Jr.’s dramatic return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), trading his iconic Iron Man helmet to step into the role of villainous mastermind Victor von Doom (Doctor Doom).
A Four-Language Nationwide Rollout
Disney India confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday will open nationwide across IMAX, 3D, and premium large-format screens, featuring localized dubbed releases in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu alongside its original English audio track.
The decision to launch the tentpole a day early in India underscores Disney's strategy to maximize global box office momentum across high-performing Asian territories, where MCU entries routinely smash opening-weekend records.
"Happy Diwali to all our fans in India," Downey Jr. and Evans stated in the joint promotional clip released by Marvel India. "We are so excited to announce that 'Avengers: Doomsday' will hit theatres in India on 17th December, a day before the rest of the world. We cannot wait for you to experience this extraordinary new chapter."
Doctor Doom and a Multiversal Collision
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (Avengers: Endgame), Avengers: Doomsday serves as the narrative anchor for Phase 6 of the MCU.
The film brings together key characters from across the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men universes to confront Doctor Doom as collapsing realities threaten the broader multiverse.
Reflecting on his return to the franchise as a central antagonist, Downey Jr. recently shared his enthusiasm for taking on Doctor Doom:
"Because you don't say yes just because you can; it has to feel right. What happens to this key relationship in Doomsday is so exciting, unexpected, and beautiful. Playing Doom allowed me to really observe what I'd been missing the whole time—just everybody else."
Box Office Expectations
With India serving as one of the largest international markets for Marvel releases, demonstrated by the record-setting runs of Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home, exhibitors across major metros are anticipating massive advance booking figures when tickets go on sale late next autumn.
Following its Indian debut on 17th December, Avengers: Doomsday will expand globally into North American and European markets on 18th December 2026.
