Police Launch Investigation into ‘Historical’ Sexual Assault Claim Against Katy Perry

MELBOURNE — Detectives in Australia have confirmed they are investigating a historical sexual assault allegation made by actor Ruby Rose against American pop superstar Katy Perry. The investigation follows a series of graphic social media posts by the Orange Is the New Black star, which the singer’s representatives have condemned as “dangerous, reckless lies”.

A spokesperson for Victoria Police confirmed on Wednesday that the Melbourne Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) is looking into an incident alleged to have occurred at a licensed premises in Melbourne’s CBD in 2010.

The ‘Spice Market’ Allegation

The controversy erupted over the weekend when Rose, 40, posted a scathing comment on the social media platform Threads. Responding to a post regarding Perry’s reaction to a Coachella performance, Rose claimed: “Katy Perry sexually assaulted me at Spice Market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a s*** what she thinks.”

In subsequent, more detailed posts, Rose alleged that she had been “resting” on a friend’s lap to avoid the singer when the alleged assault occurred. She claimed that Perry performed a graphic and non-consensual act on her, which caused her to “projectile vomit”.

Rose explained her decade-long silence by stating she had previously framed the encounter as a “funny little drunk story” to cope with the trauma. She also claimed Perry had later assisted her in obtaining a US visa, providing a further reason to keep the matter quiet.

A Strenuous Denial

Representatives for Katy Perry, 41, have moved swiftly to dismiss the accusations. In a statement released to Variety and other major outlets, Perry’s team attacked the credibility of the claims.

“The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous, reckless lies,” the statement read. “Ms Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named.”

 

 

The “I Kissed a Girl” singer has not personally commented on the matter, though her legal team is reportedly monitoring the situation closely as the police probe begins.

Victoria Police have taken the unusual step of confirming the active status of the investigation, though they have declined to name Perry specifically in line with standard privacy protocols for ongoing inquiries.

As the investigation gains momentum, former staff members of the Spice Market nightclub have begun to speak out. The venue’s former manager told LADbible that while he recalled both stars being present and “drunk” on the night in question in August 2010, he had no memory of any assault or an incident involving vomiting.

Meanwhile, social media users have unearthed a 2014 interview with actress Anna Kendrick, who joked about Perry being “aggressive” and touching her inappropriately at an awards show. While Kendrick’s comments were made in a lighthearted context at the time, they have been recirculated by supporters of Rose as part of a wider conversation regarding the singer’s past behaviour.

‘A Great Relief’

On Tuesday evening, Rose informed her followers that she would no longer be speaking publicly about the case following the finalisation of her police reports.

“This is a standard request from the police and in many ways, quite the relief,” she wrote. “I can start the healing process now.”

Under Victorian law, there is no statute of limitations for reporting sexual assault, allowing historical cases from 2010 to be fully prosecuted if sufficient evidence is found. As the SOCIT detectives begin their work, the entertainment world awaits the next development in what has become one of the industry's most high-profile legal clashes.
