‘Quarter-Mile at a Time’: Peacock Greenlights First Live-Action Fast & Furious TV Series Spin-Off
LOS ANGELES — NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock has officially greenlit the first live-action television series spin-off set within the $7 billion (£5.2 billion) Fast & Furious franchise, targeting a global premiere in 2028.
Franchise figurehead Vin Diesel is on board as executive producer alongside long-time series producers Neal H. Moritz, Jeff Kirschenbaum, Pavun Shetty, and veteran Fast screenwriter Chris Morgan. The show will be run by co-showrunners Mike Daniels (Sons of Anarchy) and Wolfe Coleman (9-1-1: Lone Star), who are penning the flagship small-screen drama for Universal Television.
The greenlight follows an initial reveal made by Diesel during NBCUniversal’s Upfront presentation earlier this year, where the actor confirmed that up to four television projects set in the Fast universe were under internal evaluation.
A Parallel Landing in 2028
The greenlight establishes a pivotal convergence for the 25-year-old action saga. The untitled Peacock series is scheduled to debut in 2028, the exact same year Universal Pictures is slated to release the 11th and final core theatrical installment, currently titled Fast Forever, on 17th March 2028.
While plot specifics and casting details are being kept under wraps, production sources confirm the show will explore expanded stories for legacy characters alongside new street-racing cells.
"Over the last decade, we've realized that the fans have wanted more—they wanted us to expand the legacy characters and their stories," Diesel noted regarding the television push. "The desire has been for us to enter the TV space in a way that respects what makes us all feel like family."
Expanding Beyond the Multiplex
Although the franchise previously produced the animated spin-off Fast & Furious Spy Racers for Netflix in 2019, the Peacock commission marks its first foray into high-budget, live-action episodic television.
The move forms part of Universal Studio Group’s broader strategy to build out domestic streaming IP around major theatrical brands, replicating crossover models seen across rival studio franchises.
Industry analysts highlight that anchoring the live-action show to Peacock gives NBCUniversal a recurring digital asset to maintain franchise engagement after the primary cinematic storyline concludes in cinemas.
Pre-Production Underway
Development on the pilot script and writer's room assembly is set to begin in Los Angeles later this autumn.
With pre-production underway, studio insiders suggest that formal announcements regarding legacy cast cameos and original ensemble leads will roll out over the course of 2027.
