Northampton Pupils to Represent UK in Global Flag Football

In a remarkable achievement for Northampton's sports scene, the talented pupils of Lings Primary School are gearing up to represent the United Kingdom in the prestigious 2024 Pro Bowl Flag Football Championship in Orlando, Florida. The journey to this international competition is the result of their outstanding victory at the national finals held at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in June 2023.

The non-contact version of American football, known as Flag Football, has become a beacon of opportunity for these young athletes. Thomas Davies, the PE teacher leading the team, expressed the significance of this opportunity, stating, "We get to represent our country, which for a lot of children is a life dream. Very few people get to do it."

Lings Primary School is among the 500 primary and secondary schools participating in the NFL Flag Championship, where the UK representatives will face off against teams from around the world, including Brazil, Japan, and Australia.

Mr. Davies shared the dedication of his team, noting, "From September all the way until now, they gave up every break, every lunchtime." An avid fan of American football himself, he revealed, "I'm a huge New England Patriots fan [and] have been all my life." His coaching journey in Flag Football began during the lockdown in 2020, and since then, the sport has captured the hearts of students at Lings Primary, becoming the most popular sport in the school.

Reflecting on the journey, Mr. Davies expressed pride in the team's progress, stating, "I can't be more proud of them." One team member, Alice, who was part of last year's National Primary School Champions, securing their spot in the US tournament, dreams of playing the sport professionally. Despite being just 12 years old, Alice has been granted the opportunity to play with her primary school team.

The complexity of Flag Football's rules is something Alice relishes. "All the technical sides, it means each game is going to be different," she shared. While the excitement builds for the trip to America, Alice admitted, "When we get on that plane, it's going to finally hit... I still don't think it's real."

As these young athletes prepare to showcase their skills on the international stage, the entire community eagerly anticipates the success and recognition they are bound to bring to Northampton and the United Kingdom.
