‘In Her Own Words’: Prime Video Secures New Princess Diana Series Built Around Secret Confessional Audio
LONDON — Prime Video has acquired exclusive UK and Ireland rights to Diana: Her Secret Confessions, a major three-part documentary series featuring hours of previously unheard, intimate audio recordings secretly taped by Diana, Princess of Wales.
Produced by Love Monday TV and distributed globally by Cineflix Rights (under the international title Diana Unheard), the 3×60-minute series draws upon five hours of confessional tapes recorded at Kensington Palace in 1991.
The audio, recorded during secret sessions with her close friend Dr James Colthurst and subsequently smuggled out of the palace originally formed the confidential primary source material for Andrew Morton’s explosive 1992 biography, Diana: Her True Story.
Reclaiming Her Narrative
The documentary series promises to reframe the late Princess’s legacy, moving beyond traditional portrayals of her as a passive figure to showcase a determined woman actively taking control of her public story amidst intense royal scrutiny.
The tapes cover a vast personal landscape, detailing her childhood, her fraught marriage to the then-Prince of Wales (now King Charles III), his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, her observations on the wider Royal Family, and her deep-seated ambitions for her sons, Princes William and Harry.
Alongside the pristine audio transfers, the series features new, exclusive interviews with key insiders who were present during the turbulent era, including Dr Colthurst and Andrew Morton himself.
"Diana, Princess of Wales is often portrayed as a victim of her circumstances, with the narrative around her even today still being written and argued about by powerful men," noted Kerene Barefield, Creative Director at Love Monday TV and Executive Producer on the series. *"By centring our series on hours of intimate recordings Diana made herself, 'Diana: Her Secret Confessions' reclaims and reframes her own story, in her own words." *
A Global Milestone Rollout
The acquisition announcement coincided with the opening of the MIPCOM television market in Cannes, where distributor Cineflix Rights launched international sales for the project.
Alongside Prime Video’s deal for the UK and Ireland, the series has already been pre-sold to a major undisclosed network in the United States, as well as securing first-window acquisition rights in Australia ahead of a broader international rollout.
The series forms part of a major wave of global programming preparing to mark the upcoming 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death.
Streaming Anchor for UK Viewers
By securing the exclusive domestic rights, Prime Video continues its push to build out premium British documentary offerings to anchor its factual streaming catalogue.
The exact premiere date for Diana: Her Secret Confessions on Prime Video is expected to be announced by Amazon over the coming weeks as post-production completes in London.
