‘More Than a Sneer’: New Draco Malfoy Star Lox Pratt Promises a ‘Layered’ Take on the Wizarding Villain
LONDON — The silver-blond hair and the infamous Slytherin scowl are returning, but the actor behind the wand is promising a significant shift in perspective. Lox Pratt, the 14-year-old breakout star cast as Draco Malfoy in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter reboot, has revealed that his portrayal will move far beyond the "2D villainy" of previous adaptations.
Speaking to Variety and 1883 Magazine this week, Pratt who recently garnered critical acclaim for his role as Jack in the BBC’s Lord of the Flies, discussed the pressure of stepping into the shoes of Tom Felton while carving out a distinct path for the character.
Beyond Harry’s Shoulder
A primary criticism of the original film franchise was its necessary focus on Harry’s perspective, often leaving Draco’s internal life unexplored. Pratt suggests that the expanded television format, helmed by showrunners Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, will finally pull back the curtain on Malfoy Manor.
“In the films, Draco is sort of the sneery villain, but I feel like there’s so much more you need to understand why”, Pratt explained. “With this adaptation, we aren’t just looking over Harry’s shoulder. We get to see Draco at home. There are some brilliant scenes that give an insight into the horrible, crippling family pressure he’s under.”
Pratt described his version of Draco as a boy "loved, but burdened," contrasting him with his previous role in Lord of the Flies. “Jack was unloved and chaos-driven. Draco is trying to live up to Lucius Malfoy’s impossible expectations. He’s not quite sure who he wants to be.”
A New Generation of Magic
The announcement comes as production on the first season, based on The Philosopher’s Stone, ramps up in the UK. Pratt joins a fresh-faced "Golden Trio" led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

Advice from the ‘OG’ Malfoy
The transition has been smoothed by the blessing of Tom Felton, who portrayed the character across eight films. Felton reportedly reached out to Pratt via social media to offer his support and a few cheeky tips for surviving life in the Wizarding World.
“Tom told me to have as much fun as possible and to take as many pictures as I can,” Pratt shared. He also confessed that he’s already taken Felton’s more mischievous advice to heart: “He told me to steal as many props as possible because they’ll be worth a fortune. I’ve already pocketed a few things!”
The Verdict
By leaning into the "tragedy" of Draco Malfoy rather than just his malice, Lox Pratt and the HBO creative team appear to be aiming for a more complex, psychologically driven reboot. While the "sneer" will undoubtedly remain a staple of the Slytherin common room, fans may finally get to see the vulnerable boy behind the Pure-blood bravado.
With the series expected to premiere in late 2026 or early 2027, the battle for the soul of Hogwarts is once again heating up, and this time, the "baddy" might just be the most interesting person in the room.
