MARVEL UNVEILS DARK NEW ‘AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY’ TRAILER AT D23 EXPO
London
Marvel Studios has sent cinema fans into overdrive after dropping a thrilling new look at its upcoming blockbuster, Avengers: Doomsday. Unveiled during Disney’s annual D23 Fan Event in Anaheim, the dramatic footage puts Oscar-winner Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom squarely in the spotlight, teasing a tragic backstory and an existential threat to the multiverse (trailer below).
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the helm-masters behind Avengers: Endgame, the film serves as the franchise's first ensemble team-up since 2019. However, the fresh preview suggests a far darker tone than previous outings.
The teaser opens with a solemn voiceover from Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), who reflects on the fallen brilliance of Victor von Doom. Describing him as someone who was once "caring and kind", Storm reveals that a devastating personal loss left the Latverian ruler utterly broken.
Viewers are then treated to a slate of high-stakes action. Amid scenes of ruined, ash-filled cities, Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) confronts Doom over the destruction, to which Doom chillingly responds: "All of you have lived stolen lives... but now you must give them back."
The standout sequence of the trailer showcases Doom’s terrifying power. When Thor (Chris Hemsworth) hurls his famed axe, Stormbreaker, Doom stops the magical weapon effortlessly with a single finger before casually blasting the God of Thunder away. He then summons a fleet of robotic Sentinels and declares: "Hell answers to me, for I am Doom."
The trailer confirms a massive crossover across three distinct cinematic universes, bringing together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. Alongside Downey Jr. and Pascal, the star-studded ensemble includes Chris Evans (returning to the MCU as Steve Rogers), Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Letitia Wright, Simu Liu, and X-Men veterans Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart.
Unsurprisingly, the release has already ignited wild fan speculation online. Keen-eyed viewers on social media platforms have pointed out slight discrepancies in Doom's eye colour and costume details in different trailer shots, giving rise to theories that the multiverse storyline may hide more than one version of Doctor Doom in the film.
Box-office trackers are already predicting record-breaking numbers when the tentpole hits UK cinemas on December 18th.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to lay the groundwork for 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars. Tickets for the December release are on sale now.
