‘The Law Has Limits, They Don’t’: Mark Wahlberg and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Hunt Down Killers in Final ‘By Any Means’ Trailer
LOS ANGELES — Paramount Pictures has unleashed the tense final trailer for By Any Means, an upcoming historical crime thriller starring Emmy winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Oscar nominee Mark Wahlberg as an unlikely duo seeking brutal justice in the 1960s Deep South.
Helmed by critically acclaimed director Elegance Bratton (The Inspection) from a screenplay by Sascha Penn, the feature arrives exclusively in cinemas on 4th September 2026.
The film offers a dramatic, high-stakes retelling of one of the most extraordinary true alliances in American law enforcement history: the moment the FBI partnered with a ruthless Mafia hitman to crack down on violent hate crimes targeting civil rights leaders in Mississippi.
A Volatile Alliance Beyond the Law
The newly released trailer showcases Abdul-Mateen II as Special FBI Agent Wayne Strider, a young Black investigator dispatched to 1966 Mississippi amidst a wave of deadly attacks against civil rights figures.
Faced with systemic obstruction, local hostility, and a fractured justice system, Strider is forced into an uneasy partnership with Gregory Scarpa (Wahlberg), a notorious, real-life Colombo crime family hitman turned secret FBI informant.
As the search for the perpetrators intensifies, the boundary between official law enforcement and vigilante vengeance rapidly dissolves.
"When the system is broken, two men divided by everything agree on one thing: the law has limits. They don't," reads the film's official synopsis released alongside the final preview.
Early test screening reports indicate a visceral response to Wahlberg’s performance as the menacing Mafia enforcer. Addressing the public reaction during recent promotional rounds, Wahlberg revealed that audience test feedback had been unusually electric:
"It was crazy," Wahlberg noted regarding early preview screenings. "The response in the theatre is really like nothing I've ever seen before."
A Star-Studded Ensemble Cast
In addition to its co-leads, By Any Means boasts a prestigious supporting ensemble.
The cast includes Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul) as civil rights activist Vernon Dahmer, alongside Nicole Beharie (The Morning Show), Josh Lucas (Yellowstone), David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck), LisaGay Hamilton, LaChanze, and Ethan Embry.
The release marks the beginning of an exceptionally busy autumn for Abdul-Mateen II, who recently earned an Emmy nomination for his performance in Marvel’s Wonder Man and is set to appear opposite Brad Pitt in The Adventures of Cliff Booth later this year.
