‘If They Wanted to Do It, We’d Have Done It’: Mahershala Ali Officially Exits Marvel’s Troubled ‘Blade’ Reboot

LOS ANGELES — Two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali has officially walked away from Marvel Studios’ long-gestating Blade reboot, bringing a definitive and bitter end to seven years of development hell.

Speaking in a remarkably candid interview with GQ, the 52-year-old actor, who was first announced in the iconic role during San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019, confirmed he has abandoned the project and moved on.

When asked directly whether the reboot was any closer to reaching the big screen, Ali delivered a blunt response: "Not with me."

The announcement puts a final stake through the heart of one of the most high-profile and snake-bitten projects in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) history.

‘They Didn’t Want to Do It’

Rather than offering polite corporate platitudes, Ali laid the blame for the film’s collapse squarely at the door of Marvel Studios and parent company Disney.

"For whatever reason, that project is not for me," Ali told the publication. "If they wanted to do it, we would've done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on. Again, you had me under contract, they have billions of dollars—if they wanted to do the movie, we would've done the movie. They didn't want to do it, so they should answer that question."

 

 

The actor added that after nearly three decades in the industry, he had learned that "what is for you is for you, and what is not is not."

Ali’s exit comes just days after Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige admitted during an appearance on Joshua Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast that he felt like a "gigantic loser and failure" over the studio’s inability to get the vampire-hunter feature into production.

Seven Years of Development Hell

The demise of Ali’s Blade caps off nearly a decade of constant creative friction, director exits, and script overhauls:

• 2019: Ali personally pitches the project to Kevin Feige after winning his second Oscar for Green Book, leading to a triumphant Hall H announcement.

• 2021: Director Bassam Tariq is hired, and Ali makes an off-screen voice cameo as Eric Brooks in the post-credits scene of Eternals.

• 2022: Tariq steps down weeks before filming is scheduled to begin. French-British filmmaker Yann Demange (71) takes the helm.

• 2023–2025: The project cycles through at least five different screenwriters while enduring Hollywood union strikes and shifting release dates. Demange departs, leaving the film directorless once more.

• July 2026: Ali officially confirms his exit, ending his contractual involvement.

Throughout the turmoil, Ali underwent over a year of rigorous martial arts and physical conditioning for the physical demands of the role. The actor revealed he has since channeled that extensive combat training into his upcoming action-thriller Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, reuniting with former Blade director Bassam Tariq.

What Now for the Daywalker?

While Wesley Snipes famously defined the half-vampire hero across three feature films between 1998 and 2004, and recently reprised the mantle in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel’s attempt to integrate the character into its current cinematic universe remains in tatters.

Marvel Studios has not yet indicated whether it intends to recast the role or shelve the property entirely.

However, Ali’s high-profile departure serves as a stark reminder of the studio's ongoing creative restructuring as it seeks to pivot away from sprawling, delayed announcements toward leaner, guaranteed productions.
