‘Subterranean Nightmare’: LaKeith Stanfield and Ben Mendelsohn to Star in Blumhouse Horror Molepeople
NEW YORK — Oscar nominee LaKeith Stanfield is set to headline the upcoming subterranean horror feature Molepeople alongside Emmy winner Ben Mendelsohn, following a joint production deal struck by Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Paramount Primal.
The project was officially unveiled during a panel at New York Comic Con over the weekend, where Stanfield confirmed that the film will land in cinemas on 27th August 2027.
Directed by British filmmaker Rob Savage (Host, The Boogeyman, Other Mommy), the film follows a man who descends into forgotten subway tunnels beneath New York City, only to uncover a terrifying, insular society living hidden beneath the streets.
Visceral Tone and British Filming Location
Written by Nathan Elston, the screenplay is described as a high-tension survival thriller. Speaking at Comic Con, Savage teased that the feature leans into unyielding, visceral horror, drawing creative inspiration from genre landmarks such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes.
Although the narrative is set in the underground labyrinth of Manhattan, principal photography is scheduled to commence across soundstages and location sets in the United Kingdom in late November 2026.
"It is an absolute pressure cooker of a script," Savage noted regarding the project. "Taking two extraordinary actors like LaKeith and Ben into that claustrophobic, subterranean environment gives us a chance to build something truly relentless."
A Fast-Track Production Journey
The project has undergone a significant trajectory to reach its current studio home.
Originally developed as an independent feature in 2024 with Anthony Ramos attached, the package was subsequently acquired and retooled by Paramount Primal and James Wan and Jason Blum’s merged Atomic Monster/Blumhouse banner, with Stanfield stepping in to lead.
For Stanfield, the feature marks another major entry in the horror genre following his breakthrough turn in Jordan Peele’s Get Out and Disney’s Haunted Mansion.
The film is produced by Jason Blum, J.D. Lifshitz, Raphael Margules, and James Harris, with Paramount handling international distribution.
Paramount Primal's Slate
The greenlight reinforces Paramount Primal’s mandate to build mid-budget, high-concept genre titles aimed at late-summer theatrical windows.
With pre-production ramping up in the UK ahead of winter filming, additional supporting cast announcements are expected over the coming weeks.
