King Charles has shared a moving video message to honor his "darling Mama" on what would have been Queen Elizabeth II’s 100th birthday. Recorded earlier this month at Balmoral, the King’s tribute reflects on the late monarch's extraordinary seven-decade reign and her enduring impact on the world.
While the milestone is a time for celebration, the King reflected on the complexities of the modern world. "Much about the times we now live in, I suspect, may have troubled her deeply," he said in his message. Despite these concerns, he emphasized his mother’s legacy of optimism, stating, "I take heart from her belief that goodness will always prevail and that a brighter dawn is never far from the horizon."
Honoring a "Life Well-Lived"
Rather than focusing on the "absence" left by her death, the King urged the public to view the day as the "celebration of a life well-lived." He reminded viewers of her remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life, whether through grand moments of national history or small, personal touches, like her famous "marvellous twinkle of the eye when sharing a marmalade sandwich with Paddington Bear."
To mark the centenary, a series of commemorative events are taking place:
The Queen Elizabeth Memorial: King Charles and Queen Camilla are visiting the British Museum to view the finalized design for the Queen Elizabeth Memorial in St. James’s Park. Designed by Lord Foster, the memorial will feature statues, a bust of Prince Philip, and a new glass "unity bridge."
The Queen Elizabeth Trust: The government has launched a new charity with £40 million in funding to support the restoration of community spaces.
The Royal Reception: Buckingham Palace will host representatives from charities supported by the late Queen. The reception will include guests also celebrating their 100th birthday, whom the King will present with centenary cards.
The Queen Elizabeth Exhibition: The public can view "Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style" at Buckingham Palace, an extensive display of her wardrobe, including iconic outfits from her wedding to the 2012 London Olympics.
Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away in September 2022 at age 96, is still one of the most beloved figures in British history. Highlighting her unique role, Queen Camilla noted in a recent documentary, "I don't think I've ever seen anybody have a sense of duty like she had."
Looking ahead, King Charles expressed his shared commitment to his mother’s values. He renewed his "own solemn pledge of duty and service to you all" and concluded his tribute with a poignant final message: "God bless you, darling Mama; you remain forever in our hearts and prayers."
