Kimi Antonelli delivered a flawless drive to victory at the United States Grand Prix, extending his Drivers' Championship lead to 123 points and putting himself on the verge of becoming Formula 1's youngest-ever world champion.
Starting on pole position at the Circuit of the Americas, the 20-year-old Italian executed an effective one-stop strategy on medium and hard compound tyres. Antonelli built an early lead through the opening lap as behind him Red Bull's Max Verstappen, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, and Lewis Hamilton engaged in multi-car battles.
Antonelli crossed the finish line 13.078 seconds clear of second-placed Leclerc, marking his ninth Grand Prix win of the season and validating Mercedes' updated aerodynamic package.
Reflecting on the victory, Antonelli stated:
"It was the result we needed. The whole team deserve it so much and all this time putting in so much work on bringing this new package and finally seeing the result is very pleasant and it was also perfect execution from strategy to call the one-stop so I’m really happy we made it stick and it was a great team effort."
While Antonelli controlled the pace upfront, the fight for the remaining podium spots was determined by diverging tyre strategies:
- Charles Leclerc (P2): Starting on softs before switching to two stints on medium tyres, Leclerc engaged in wheel-to-wheel battles with Verstappen across the opening lap. The Monegasque driver used fresher rubber late in the race to pass Lando Norris and execute a late move on Verstappen at Turn 12 to secure second place.
- Max Verstappen (P3): Pitting early on lap 13 for a second set of softs, Verstappen contended with balance and engine braking concerns on his Red Bull. He held off a late charge from Lewis Hamilton to secure his sixth consecutive podium.
- Lewis Hamilton (P4): Hamilton finished just one second behind Verstappen in fourth place, keeping his mathematical title chances alive by a single point.
- Lando Norris (P5): Managing an extended single-stop strategy, Norris held off Isack Hadjar to take fifth place for McLaren.
Mercedes teammate George Russell experienced a difficult afternoon. Starting sixth, Russell received a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage during an opening-lap battle with Oscar Piastri. Serving the penalty dropped him to tenth before he recovered to finish eighth.
Referring to his wheel-to-wheel scrap, Russell asserted over team radio: “I was on the inside, he was overtaking on the outside. That’s his risk.”
With four rounds remaining and a maximum of 125 points available across the rest of the season, Antonelli holds a 123-point lead over Russell and a 124-point margin over Hamilton.
Antonelli can formally clinch his maiden Drivers' Championship next weekend at the Mexico City Grand Prix under the following conditions:
- A ninth-place finish or higher guarantees the title, regardless of rival results.
- A tenth-place finish is sufficient if Hamilton wins the race.
- If neither Russell nor Hamilton wins in Mexico, Antonelli will automatically seal the championship regardless of his finishing position.
