‘Die Hard in a Hurricane’: Keanu Reeves Replaces Alan Ritchson in Netflix Action Thriller Maelstrom
LOS ANGELES — Action cinema icon Keanu Reeves has entered talks to lead Netflix’s upcoming high-concept thriller Maelstrom, taking over the starring role from Reacher actor Alan Ritchson.
The project, which has been described by trade insiders as a "Die Hard-style" survival thriller set during a catastrophic storm, is set to be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Carry-On, The Shallows, Non-Stop).
Ritchson, who was initially attached to headline the streaming feature, departed the project due to scheduling and logistical conflicts, opening the door for the 62-year-old John Wick star to step into the lead.
A 33-Year Journey to the Screen
First pitched to studios in 1993, Maelstrom spent more than three decades in development hell before being acquired and fast-tracked by Netflix.
The original spec script, recently polished by screenwriter Mark Bianculli (Cliffhanger), follows a federal marshal tasked with protecting the fiancée of a dangerous international arms dealer over the course of a single night. When the witness agrees to testify in court, the arms dealer dispatches a team of heavily armed mercenaries to execute her.
The conflict escalates when a category-five hurricane hits the coastal city where they are hiding, knocking out all communications, isolation networks, and backup reinforcements. trapped inside a flooded building complex, the marshal must single-handedly fend off contract killers while battling the rising storm waters.
"The script carries that classic 1990s high-concept energy, relentless pacing, a tight physical space, and extreme environmental stakes," a production source noted following trade confirmation. "Swapping Alan Ritchson for Keanu Reeves shifts the tone from sheer physical brute force to a seasoned, gritty survivalist fighting against impossible odds."
Netflix’s High-Concept Action Push
The revival of Maelstrom forms part of Netflix’s strategy to acquire unproduced, legacy studio spec scripts following the global streaming success of Collet-Serra’s airport thriller Carry-On.
Under Ori Marmur, Vice President of Original Studio Film at Netflix, the platform has actively sought high-octane, single-location action properties designed to anchor global weekend viewership.
The casting switch also completes a curious Hollywood trade reversal: Ritchson previously inherited the lead role in the upcoming sci-fi feature War Machine after Reeves dropped out due to scheduling conflicts in 2025. Now, Maelstrom sees Reeves taking over a role vacated by Ritchson.
Production Timeline
With Reeves currently wrapping vocal and physical commitments for his upcoming film slate, including Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and pre-production on John Wick 5, principal photography on Maelstrom is expected to commence in early 2027.
Netflix executives are targeting a late 2027 global streaming premiere as casting for the female witness and antagonist roles continues in Los Angeles.
