LONDON — In an unprecedented show of confidence, HBO has officially greenlit a second season of its Harry Potter television reboot, more than seven months before the first episode is due to hit screens.
The announcement, confirmed by HBO and Warner Bros. Television on Wednesday 6th May, solidifies the studio’s ambitious ten-year plan to adapt J.K. Rowling’s seven novels into seven distinct seasons. Season 2 will focus on the events of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, with production scheduled to begin this autumn at Leavesden Studios.
The ‘Succession’ Blueprint
In a strategic leadership shift, HBO also confirmed that Jon Brown, a key writer on Season 1 and a veteran of the multi-award-winning Succession, has been promoted to co-showrunner. He will work alongside lead architect Francesca Gardiner to manage what the studio describes as an "overlapping" production cycle.
“As we have laid out our plans to finish Season 1 by Christmas and return to production for Season 2 this autumn, it became clear that bringing on a co-showrunner is the key to maintaining our momentum,” Gardiner said in a statement. “Jon is a brilliant collaborator, and we are lucky to have him as we continue this remarkable journey.”
A ‘No-Gap’ Strategy
The early renewal is designed to solve the "ageing up" problem that often plagues child-led franchises. By commencing filming on the second book before the first has even premiered, HBO aims to minimise the gaps between seasons, ensuring that lead stars Dominic McLaughlin (Harry Potter), Arabella Stanton (Hermione Granger), and Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley) remain age-appropriate for their respective school years at Hogwarts.
While HBO CEO Casey Bloys previously cautioned that the show would "not be annual," this accelerated schedule suggests the studio is aiming for a release cadence closer to the original film series.

The renewal comes on the heels of another major announcement: Academy Award-winner Hans Zimmer has been tapped to compose the original score, collaborating with the Bleeding Fingers Music collective. The team is reportedly working to create a "distinctive sonic identity" that honours John Williams’ iconic legacy while grounding the series in a fresh, orchestral soundscape.
The adult cast is also beginning to take shape, with John Lithgow recently confirmed as Albus Dumbledore and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall. Nick Frost is set to take on the mantle of Rubeus Hagrid, while Paapa Essiedu has been cast as the enigmatic Severus Snape.
