Government Boosts Offshore Wind Prices to Bolster Clean Energy Leadership

In a bid to reinforce its global standing in clean energy, the UK government has hiked the maximum price for offshore wind projects in the upcoming Contracts for Difference (CfD) auction by 66%, from £44/MWh to £73/MWh. The move addresses industry concerns and aims to attract investments in offshore wind, a crucial component of the UK's renewable energy strategy.

This adjustment reflects the government's recognition of global challenges, including rising inflation and interest rates impacting the cost of building wind farms. The CfD scheme, which guarantees a set price for renewable energy, has played a pivotal role in the UK's shift to 48% renewable electricity generation in the first quarter of this year.

With a separate funding pot for offshore wind projects and considerations for environmental and economic sustainability, the government aims to achieve its ambitious target of 50GW of offshore wind by 2030. Industry leaders have welcomed these measures, emphasising their importance in unlocking investments, improving energy security, and creating green jobs.

This strategic move aligns with the UK's net zero targets, signalling a commitment to a sustainable energy transition amid global economic challenges.
