A 16-year-old gunman opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon, killing three young children and a teacher before an armed citizen pursued the teenager inside and shot him dead.
Police officers responded to emergency dispatch calls placed at 12:59 p.m. local time, initially reporting a suspect shooting a long gun into a parked vehicle near the campus. Minutes later, dispatch received additional emergency calls indicating the suspect had forced entry into the elementary school by shooting through locked entrance doors.
A local community member who witnessed the initial gunfire pursued the suspect into the building and engaged him, neutralizing the gunman before law enforcement entered the facility three minutes later.
Authorities confirmed that the deceased victims include three students aged 5, 8, and 11, alongside a 54-year-old teacher. A 7-year-old student and another teacher remain hospitalized in critical condition.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek joined local officials at an evening briefing, expressing deep sorrow and commending the bystander who confronted the gunman:
"No parent should have to have this kind of day, and no community should have to live through this kind of day. And as we learn more about the children and the adults who have been killed or injured, and their families and their loved ones, we are going to do a lot of crying, and we are going to cry together, and we're probably going to cry privately."
Steven Cook, superintendent of Bend-La Pine Schools, offered an emotional response to the tragedy:
"We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy…No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing."
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed that officers had conducted active threat response training as recently as August, saying:
"Unfortunately, this is something we train for on a regular basis, and we must…This is going to be a long investigation."
Federal authorities have stepped in to support municipal law enforcement with the ongoing inquiry into the suspect's motives and weapons origin. FBI Director Kash Patel addressed the agency's involvement on social media, saying "We will make every resource they need available".
Gun violence prevention advocates and political leaders also issued statements in the aftermath of the tragedy. Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords commented:
"This cannot continue to be a reality in our country. Leaders at every level must step up and act.”
U.S. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon criticized legislative inaction on firearm regulations:
“My heart is with the victims of today’s shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School and their loved ones now facing the consequences of another school shooting in America…Once again we must ask how many schools must be shot up before Republicans agree to act to curb gun violence,”
Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler addressed the long road to recovery for the city:
“No matter how you’re feeling right now — angry, sad, devastated, numb — those are valid feelings, and in the coming days, we’re all going to need to lean on each other for support,”
School district officials announced that all classes and athletic events across the district will remain canceled on Friday to allow students, staff, and families access to regional crisis counseling services.
