‘Deeply Regrets Her Choices’: Former Source Chief Kim Osorio Pleads Guilty to Lying to FBI in $300k Fraud Case

NEW YORK — Pioneering hip-hop journalist Kimberly Osorio, the first female editor-in-chief of The Source magazine, has pleaded guilty in a Brooklyn federal court to lying to FBI agents during an investigation into a major non-profit fraud scheme.

The 52-year-old media personality admitted to making a materially false statement to a federal agent after attempting to hide a mobile phone belonging to her boyfriend, Rashad Ruhani, who was under federal investigation for his role in embezzling $300,000 (£225,000) from the legal aid charity Queens Defenders.

Appearing before a federal judge last Thursday 17th September, Osorio formally acknowledged her actions.

"On or about June 10th, I made a materially false statement to a federal agent when I denied taking possession of Rashad Ruhani's cell phone," Osorio stated during her plea hearing.

Airborne Searches and Airport Confrontations

According to federal court filings, the incident stems from a June 2025 flight Osorio and Ruhani took together from Los Angeles to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

At the time, Ruhani was under active federal surveillance for conspiring with Lori Zeno, the founder of Queens Defenders, to misappropriate charitable funds intended for indigent legal defense. Prosecutors noted that the stolen funds were allegedly spent on luxury holidays to Bali, Mercedes-Benz vehicle repairs, and cosmetic teeth whitening.

During the cross-country flight, prosecutors revealed that Osorio conducted internet searches on her personal phone regarding "wire fraud" and "federal fund misappropriation" while sitting alongside Ruhani. Upon landing, the couple separated in an attempt to evade law enforcement.

When FBI special agents arrested Ruhani at the gate, he was found without a mobile phone. Moments later, agents confronted Osorio near a neighboring gate. Osorio denied traveling with Ruhani or possessing any of his electronic devices, claiming she was traveling alone and suggesting Ruhani must have lost his phone.

Subsequent wiretaps and home searches by federal agents later recovered notes and recorded calls detailing attempts to conceal the device.

A Historic Career Overshadowed

Osorio’s guilty plea marks a dramatic turn for one of the most prominent figures in American hip-hop journalism.

Having joined The Source as a freelance writer in 1998, she rose through the ranks to become the landmark publication's first female editor-in-chief in 2002. Following her termination in 2005, Osorio filed a landmark federal lawsuit alleging gender discrimination, sexual harassment, and retaliatory discharge against the magazine’s co-founders. In 2006, a jury awarded her a landmark $8 million judgment, cementing her status as an industry trailblazer. She later returned to helm the magazine in 2012 before transitioning into television production and authoring her 2008 memoir, Straight From The Source.

In a statement following the hearing, Osorio's defense attorney, Paul P. Martin, noted that his client "deeply regrets the choices that led to today".

Sentencing Scheduled for December

Ruhani and Zeno were subsequently convicted in Brooklyn federal court earlier this year for their roles in the embezzlement scheme.

Under federal sentencing guidelines, Osorio faces a statutory maximum penalty of up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, or potential probation.

US District Judge Raymond Dearie scheduled Osorio's formal sentencing hearing for 28th December 2026.
