"Systematically Worn Down": Firerose Levels New Narcissistic Abuse Allegations Against Billy Ray Cyrus

NASHVILLE — The fallout from the short-lived marriage between country veteran Billy Ray Cyrus and Australian musician Firerose has reached a fever pitch. In a series of raw social media posts and newly leaked audio, Firerose (legal name Johanna Rose Hodges) has accused her ex-husband of "systematic narcissistic abuse," claiming the "Achy Breaky Heart" singer subjected her to a year of isolation, manipulation, and volatile rage.

The allegations, which Firerose shared with her followers on Wednesday, represent her most detailed public account of their seven-month marriage since their divorce was finalized in August 2024.

The "Shadow of Narcissism"

In a poignant Instagram post featuring a tearful selfie and clips of her during the marriage, the 38-year-old singer described herself as becoming a "shell of a person."

“Over the years, my spirit was systematically worn down,” Firerose wrote in her caption. “This is always what happens with narcissistic abuse. It’s not an accident. I was trained to be afraid of what would happen if I even dared to think about sharing a glimpse of the truth I was living behind closed doors.”

Firerose detailed a "playbook" of behavior she claims Cyrus utilized to maintain control, including:

  • Isolation: Allegedly forcing her to distance herself from close loved ones.

  • Control: Creating "very strict rules" that left her "walking on eggshells."

  • Rage: Subjecting her to frequent verbal assaults that made her "terrified" to speak.

The Audio Evidence

Accompanying the statement was a disturbing audio recording of a man, identified by Firerose as Cyrus, berating her. In the clip, the man can be heard calling her a "selfish b*tch" and an "idiot" during an argument regarding his schedule.

“It’s 9:15 you idiot. I needed to leave two hours ago,” the man yells, while Firerose is heard quietly pleading for him to "please stop screaming." The man continues: “Stand there and cry, why don’t you stand there and cry. You deserve every bit of this.”

Cyrus Strikes Back: Claims of "Fraud"

Cyrus, 64, has not yet issued a formal response to this week's specific "narcissism" label, but he has previously been scorched-earth in his defense. During the initial 2024 divorce proceedings, Cyrus accused Firerose of being a "fraud" who married him solely to "usurp the Cyrus name" for her own career gains.

In a July 2024 statement, Cyrus admitted he was "at his wit’s end" during the recorded arguments, claiming he only became volatile after discovering Firerose had allegedly lied about her past, including a prior marriage and a felony arrest for residential burglary.

“I saw before my very own eyes, everything I thought I knew about her was a lie,” Cyrus stated at the time. “See you in court.”

A Family in Turmoil

The drama between the exes comes as the broader Cyrus family remains under a spotlight of concern. In early 2025, Billy Ray's son, Trace Cyrus, posted a public plea for his father to "get help" following a bizarre performance at the Liberty Ball in Washington, D.C.

Firerose echoed these sentiments last year, stating it was "very sad to see those same struggles continue for him," but noted that she is now focusing on her own "healing and using my story to encourage others to find strength."

As the singer-songwriter transitions back to her solo career, she has made it clear that while the divorce settlement may have resulted in her walking away with $0 in alimony, her "freedom" is her greatest asset.
