FBI Raids Beverly Hills Mansion Linked to Investigation into Former Rep. Eric Swalwell

FBI Raids Beverly Hills Mansion Linked to Investigation into Former Rep. Eric Swalwell

Federal law enforcement executed a search warrant at a Beverly Hills mansion on Tuesday morning in connection with an ongoing criminal investigation involving former California Congressman Eric Swalwell.

Roughly two dozen FBI agents participated in the early-morning raid at the property, which public records and sources confirm belongs to billionaire developer Stephen Cloobeck, a long-time campaign donor who previously hosted the former lawmaker. During the operation, several individuals were temporarily escorted from the residence in handcuffs before being released.

In official statements, the Justice Department and FBI acknowledged the operation, stating:

"Early this morning the FBI conducted an operation in the Los Angeles region related to an ongoing criminal investigation. We have no further comment."

Legal representatives for Cloobeck confirmed he was away during the search:

"Mr Cloobeck was not home when the search warrant was executed and continues to have faith in the judicial process of this country."

The 45-year-old former Democratic lawmaker stepped down from his seat in the House of Representatives and ended his California gubernatorial campaign in April following reporting that detailed sexual misconduct accusations from multiple women, including a former staffer who alleged rape. Swalwell faces active criminal inquiries by federal authorities, the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, and the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

Swalwell has consistently denied all criminal accusations, previously stating:

"These accusations are false, fabricated, and deeply offensive - a calculated and transparent political hit job."

Upon resigning from Congress, Swalwell wrote:

"I will fight the serious false allegations made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make."

Cloobeck, who donated $1 million to a political action committee supporting Swalwell's political bid earlier in the year, subsequently cut ties with the candidate once the allegations became public. Cloobeck told reporters:

"I am no longer associated with a man that takes advantage of women. I support women's rights."

Tuesday's enforcement action marks the second major search connected to the investigation. In August, federal agents intercepted Swalwell at San Francisco International Airport to seize his electronic devices and simultaneously executed a search warrant at his Washington, D.C., residence.

Additionally, the White House recently declassified FBI documents detailing a past investigation into Swalwell's contact with suspected Chinese intelligence operative Christine Fang. According to the declassified files, Swalwell disclosed to investigators that he had physical relations with Fang on several occasions up until March 2015. Swalwell was briefed by federal agents regarding Fang in 2015 and was never charged with any wrongdoing related to that inquiry.
