Fatal Incident on Goliath Rollercoaster Prompts Temporary Closures Of Nine Coasters Across Six Flags Parks

Six Flags has temporarily shut down nine rollercoasters across six amusement parks following a fatal incident on Monday afternoon at Six Flags Over Georgia, roughly 15 miles northwest of Atlanta.

While law enforcement and park representatives have not officially confirmed the exact cause of death or how other individuals sustained injuries, local news helicopter footage showed the Goliath rollercoaster halted midway as park staff evacuated passengers. Eyewitnesses speaking with NBC affiliate WXIA reported seeing a man fall from the ride, with one witness stating he struck the structure multiple times before impact.

The Cobb County Police Department's major crimes unit has launched an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Official Statements and Precautionary Closures

Park officials and local leaders have expressed deep sorrow over the event. A Six Flags spokesperson released a statement addressing the tragedy: "We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the guest's family, friends, and loved ones."

The company added that local authorities responded immediately and that park management is cooperating fully with the investigation, while also offering support to affected guests and team members.

Cobb County Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Lisa Cupid issued a statement regarding the impact on the local community:

"I cannot imagine the horror the patrons and employees witnessed today, and my heart aches for the family who lost a loved one…We are all grappling with how something so devastating could happen at a place that has given generations of families such happy memories."

Out of an abundance of caution, Six Flags has chosen to pause operations on nine comparable rollercoasters across its North American portfolio while reviews take place.

About the Goliath Ride

The Goliath rollercoaster opened at the Georgia park in 2006. According to park specifications, the ride reaches maximum speeds of 70 mph (112 km/h) and climbs to a height of 200 feet (61 meters), featuring a 170-foot drop and a 540-degree spiral during its three-and-a-half-minute run.

The incident arrives shortly after another major decision by the operator, following news last month that Six Flags Magic Mountain in Southern California would retire its X2 rollercoaster amid ongoing lawsuits regarding alleged passenger injuries.
