‘A Heat-Seeking Missile’: Adam Wingard Unleashes Genetically Engineered Killers in Explosive First Trailer for A24’s ‘Onslaught’

LOS ANGELES — Independent entertainment powerhouse A24 has officially dropped the highly anticipated first trailer for Onslaught, a bombastic, blood-soaked action-horror thriller helmed by Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard.

The explosive two-minute teaser positions rising Hollywood icon and newly minted DC Universe (DCU) star Adria Arjona (Hit Man, Andor) as a ferocious new action heroine. Arjona finds herself squarely in the crosshairs of a rogue squad of hyper-advanced, genetically engineered super-soldiers who have escaped a nearby clandestine military base.

The film marks a deliberate, highly anticipated homecoming for Wingard. After spending the last half-decade directing massive, effects-heavy Hollywood blockbusters like Godzilla vs. Kong, the director has re-teamed with his long-time screenwriting partner Simon Barrett to return to the gritty, independent genre roots that made them cult favorites.

The Human Heat-Seeking Missiles

Set against a desolate desert backdrop, Onslaught tracks a former Army sniper (Arjona) attempting to live a quiet, secluded life with her young daughter in a remote trailer park. Her peaceful existence is shattered when a top-secret government experiment goes catastrophically wrong, triggering an immediate, high-stakes manhunt across the state.

The trailer showcases a terrifying look at the escaped combatants, who are presented less as traditional soldiers and more as relentless, cold-blooded killing machines. Driven by a sinister corporate directive, a ruthless government handler played by Rebecca Hall (The Night House) chillingly outlines the true nature of the threat:

“We set out to create an ideal combatant to be deployed against the domestic populace,” Hall’s character explains over footage of bone-crunching tactical violence. “These men are conditioned to kill until they are stopped. The human equivalent of a heat-seeking missile. The perfect soldier.”

To protect her daughter from the impending purge, Arjona's character is forced to unearth her lethal military training, waging a one-woman guerrilla war against an army of physically superior hunters.

The ‘Secret Sequel’ Speculation

Beyond the trailer’s relentless barrage of gunfights and hand-to-hand combat, genre enthusiasts are already spinning elaborate theories regarding how Onslaught fits into Wingard's existing cinematic ecosystem.

The project features an extraordinarily stacked ensemble cast, including UFC champion Alex Pereira, Drew Starkey (Outer Banks), Michael Biehn (The Terminator), and Reginald VelJohnson (Die Hard).

Crucially, the film also features Dan Stevens, the English actor who famously led Wingard and Barrett’s beloved 2014 psychological thriller The Guest. Stevens’ conspicuous absence from the first trailer has immediately fueled rampant online speculation that Onslaught may secretly operate as a backdoor, spiritual sequel to The Guest, which similarly revolved around a highly volatile, military-enhanced super-soldier gone rogue.

Wingard & Barrett’s Collaborative Genre Architecture

Collaborative Feature Film Primary Genre Fusion Studio / Production Infrastructure Central Narrative Construct
You’re Next (2011) Slasher / Home Invasion Comedy Lionsgate / Phase 4 A subverted, highly trained heroine eliminates animal-masked assassins
The Guest (2014) Neon-Noir / Psychological Action Picturehouse Entertainment A charismatic, genetically modified soldier infiltrates a grieving family
Godzilla x Kong (2024) Blockbuster Monster / Sci-Fi Warner Bros. / Legendary Giant Titans unite to combat a subterranean simian threat
Onslaught (2026) Action-Horror / Survival Thriller A24 / Independent An elite veteran sniper defends her family from rogue bio-engineered weapons

The Rise of Adria Arjona

The physical, intensely demanding lead role in Onslaught adds yet another massive pillar to Arjona’s skyrocketing career profile. The 34-year-old actress has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last 24 months, earning widespread critical acclaim for her electric performance opposite Glen Powell in Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, alongside a prominent role in the Star Wars universe via Andor.

Her star wattage is set to expand exponentially after recently signing on to join James Gunn’s meticulously overhauled DCU, where she will play a pivotal superhero role.

Onslaught represents her definitive coronation as an autonomous, box-office-drawing action lead. Production sources indicate that Arjona performed the vast majority of her own complex tactical stunts and hand-to-hand fight choreography throughout the intense, grueling shoot.

The Verdict

By combining the atmospheric, slow-burn tension of traditional A24 psychological thrillers with the unhinged, high-velocity ultraviolence of modern action blockbusters, Wingard looks poised to deliver one of the most unique theatrical experiences of the year.

With the first trailer already generating a massive wave of digital engagement among action purists, the film is tracking to be a significant late-summer hit for the independent studio. Audiences won't have to wait long to see the full extent of the carnage, as Onslaught is officially scheduled to blast its way into cinemas across the UK and North America on Friday 4th September 2026.
