Elon Musk and AI Giant Anthropic Pledge Billions in Shares In Response To Concerns Over AI Development

Elon Musk and artificial intelligence firm Anthropic have announced separate multi-billion-dollar equity giveaway commitments aimed at supporting public welfare, responding to widespread social anxiety and safety concerns regarding rapid AI development.

Musk, who leads xAI and aerospace firm SpaceX, posted on social media that he intends to distribute company equity directly to younger Americans starting next year:

"Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many."

The statement came after Musk commented on a public benefit initiative unveiled by rival developer Anthropic, writing that he recommended "giving the shares directly to the public. This is what I will be doing." Specific details surrounding distribution mechanisms for the estimated 72 million eligible children have not yet been outlined.

Anthropic's Public Benefit Fund and Upcoming Public Listing

Anthropic, the creator of the Claude AI model, has announced that it is setting aside 5% of its corporate shares to establish a new "Public Benefit Fund" designed to make direct contributions to the public good.

The fund, which is structured as a wholly owned limited liability company, is designed to scale alongside the firm's commercial growth. The company confirmed that its board retains discretion to add an additional 2% of shares "for every 50% increase in the company's value above a set baseline".

Anthropic highlighted the contrast between its model and standard executive compensation practices:

“Because of the way the Fund is structured, the more Anthropic grows, the larger the share of the company that can be dedicated expressly to the public good…It is common practice for tech companies to offer escalating compensation awards to their executives. We are instead directing that equity to the public benefit.”

The equity commitments coincide with Anthropic's preparations for an initial public offering (IPO) as a public benefit corporation, a stock market listing that could value the business at up to $1 trillion. The company noted that the fund "might explore" potential initiatives including "large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations", while confirming that no equity will be used for political lobbying or campaign giving.

Safety Concerns and Impact on Labor Market

The financial commitments arrive during an intense public debate regarding the societal impacts of advanced artificial intelligence, particularly surrounding automated job displacement and safety governance.

Research from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) indicates that approximately 40% of global employment could be disrupted or altered by AI adoption, with impact figures rising to 60% in advanced economies. Anthropic specifically identified workforce disruption as a primary target for its fund, building upon a previously established $200 million commitment to study labor market changes.

Broader safety concerns have also prompted movement among policymakers and corporate leaders:

  • Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon warned after resigning in September: "I believe that if we don't slow down at the current rate of progress, there is a strong chance that we could all die in the immediate future".
  • Industry leaders including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Musk have advocated for slowed development schedules and independent oversight.
  • U.S. President Donald Trump recently signed a "morally binding" document alongside AI executives establishing corporate responsibility for safety, while naming Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to lead a new government taskforce on AI coordination.

Anthropic stated that it plans to release further details concerning the governance structure, valuation metrics, and public reporting for its new fund in the coming months.
