Electric Double-Decker Bus Catches Fire in South London

In a startling incident during the Thursday morning rush hour, an electric double-decker bus burst into flames on Wimbledon Hill Road/Alwyne Road in Wimbledon, South London.

The London Fire Brigade deployed three fire engines and approximately 15 firefighters to the incident, which occurred shortly after 07:20 GMT. The blaze prompted the evacuation of the bus, as captured in videos and pictures circulating on social media.  Road closures and a 25-metre cordon are in effect, causing disruptions in both directions on Wimbledon Hill Road.

Although no injuries have been reported, witnesses, including local resident Max Pashley, described the event to City A.M, stating, "We heard a huge bang. We were terrified."

Tom Cunnington, TfL's head of bus business development, assured the public, saying, "Safety is our top priority, and we are working with the operator, London General, and the bus manufacturer, Switch, to investigate what happened."

The Metropolitan Police expressed gratitude towards the local community for their patience and cooperation during the ongoing emergency response. Commuters are advised to steer clear of the affected area until the situation is resolved.
