LOS ANGELES — The two most iconic families in American comedy have officially united for a new generation. Eddie Murphy has confirmed that his eldest son, Eric Murphy, and Jasmin Lawrence, daughter of fellow comedy legend Martin Lawrence, have welcomed their first child together, a baby girl.

The Beverly Hills Cop star shared the joyful news on Saturday evening, 18th April, while attending the 51st AFI Life Achievement Award tribute gala at the Dolby Theatre, where he was being honoured for his storied career. Speaking on the red carpet, Murphy revealed that the newest addition to the family arrived earlier this month.

In an interview with E! News, Murphy was unable to hide his pride as he confirmed the birth and the newborn’s name.

“They just had a baby girl,” Murphy told reporters. “They just had her two weeks ago, or a week ago. Yeah, Ari Skye.”

The birth of Ari Skye marks a historic merging of two Hollywood lineages. Eric, 36, and Jasmin, 30, have been the subject of public fascination since they first went public with their relationship in 2021. Despite their fathers’ long-standing friendship and multiple collaborations, most notably in the 1999 classic Life, the couple famously revealed they were introduced by a mutual uncle rather than their famous parents.

A father of ten himself, Eddie Murphy is no stranger to the trials of parenting, but he was quick to joke that he wouldn’t be overstepping as a grandfather. When asked if he had any pearls of wisdom for the new parents, the 65-year-old actor offered a characteristically candid perspective on giving advice.

“Oh, you don’t give advice like that,” Murphy remarked with a laugh. “You know, your kids don’t go by your advice. Your kids go by the example you set. They watch you. The stuff you be saying, they don’t even pay that s*** no mind. They watch and see what you do.”

While Murphy is already a grandfather of two, the arrival of Ari Skye marks the first time Martin Lawrence has stepped into the role of "Grandpa."

Lawrence, 61, took to Instagram on Sunday to share his own excitement, posting a heartfelt message to the new parents. “My heart is overflowing with love and gratitude,” he wrote. “Watching Jasmin and Eric begin this journey into parenthood means everything to me. Welcome to the next generation!”

The two comedy titans have previously joked about the "comedic pressure" on any potential offspring. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2022, Lawrence joked that he would try to get Eddie to pay for the wedding, while Murphy previously told The New York Times that he was simply happy the families were "officially together."

The baby news served as a perfect "encore" to Murphy's evening at the AFI Gala, where he received a lifetime achievement award. During his acceptance speech, he noted that while his cinematic achievements are significant, his "true legacy" is his family.
