“A Perfect Fit”: Donald Glover Cast as the Voice of Yoshi in Upcoming ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ Film
HOLLYWOOD, CA — The Mushroom Kingdom’s expansion into the stars has found its most iconic companion. Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment officially announced today that Golden Globe and Grammy winner Donald Glover has joined the cast of the highly anticipated sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, to voice the beloved dinosaur, Yoshi.
The casting ends months of speculation regarding how the cinematic universe would adapt the character’s signature chirps and pops into a speaking role. According to studio insiders, Glover will provide a "cool, loyal, and slightly sardonic" personality to the character, who is expected to serve as a pivotal guide for Mario as he navigates the gravity-defying hurdles of the Comet Observatory.
Reinventing a Silent Icon
Since his debut in Super Mario World (1990), Yoshi has largely communicated through melodic sound effects. However, following the trend set by Chris Pratt’s Mario and Keegan-Michael Key’s Toad, the film version of Yoshi will feature a fully fleshed-out speaking voice.
Director Aaron Horvath noted that Glover’s unique ability to balance humor with soulful sincerity made him the only choice for the role.
“Yoshi isn’t just a mount; he’s the heart of the adventure,” Horvath said in a press release. “Donald brings a rhythmic, laid-back energy that perfectly captures a creature who has lived among the stars for centuries. It’s a performance that honors the legacy while giving fans something entirely new.”
The Galaxy Team Expands
Glover joins an ensemble that is rapidly becoming one of the most star-studded in animation history. While Chris Pratt and Charlie Day are confirmed to return as Mario and Luigi, the Galaxy adaptation introduces a new cosmic roster:
-
Rosalina: Reportedly voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy (reprising her role from the first film’s post-credits tease).
-
Luma: Voiced by Jacob Tremblay.
-
King Boo: Rumored to be voiced by Bill Hader.
A “Lando” Vibe in Space
Early buzz from the recording booth suggests that Glover’s Yoshi will be a bit of a "galactic drifter." Rather than the bubbly, high-pitched dinosaur of the Yoshi’s Island games, this iteration is described as a "seasoned navigator of the cosmos" with a dry wit—drawing comparisons to Glover’s smooth-talking turn as a young Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars franchise.
The film will reportedly adapt the "Yoshi Flight" mechanics from the 2007 Wii classic, with Glover providing the vocal cues for the character's various fruit-based transformations—including the Dash Pepper (super speed) and the Blimp Fruit (inflation).
Nintendo’s Cinematic Dominance
The casting news comes as Nintendo continues to solidify its grip on the global box office. Following the $1.36 billion success of the first film, the "Nintendo Cinematic Universe" (NCU) has become a top priority for Universal Pictures.
Industry analysts suggest that the inclusion of an A-lister like Glover is a strategic move to broaden the film's appeal to adult audiences who grew up with the Community and Atlanta star, while maintaining the family-friendly charm of the source material.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is currently slated for a theatrical release on 3rd April 2027. With production now in full swing, fans are eagerly awaiting the first "vocal teaser" to hear Glover’s take on Yoshi’s famous "Mlem!" tongue snap.
