“Ready 4 Action”: Director Jeff Fowler Confirms ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ Has Officially Started Filming

LOS ANGELES — The Blue Blur isn't slowing down. Just one day after Paramount and Warner Bros. finalized a historic merger, director Jeff Fowler sent the gaming community into a frenzy by confirming that production has officially commenced on Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

Fowler, who has steered the franchise since its 2020 debut, shared the news via social media on Monday, March 2, with a high-energy "First Look" from the set. The image features Fowler holding a clapperboard in a grassy field backed by massive blue screens, with a unmistakable prop resting over his shoulder: Amy Rose’s iconic Piko Piko Hammer.

A “Frozen” Icon Joins the Cast

The production start comes on the heels of the film’s biggest casting reveal to date. Paramount has officially confirmed that Kristen Bell (Frozen, The Good Place) will provide the voice for Amy Rose, the optimistic, hammer-wielding pink hedgehog who was first teased in the mid-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Bell joins an established "A-list" voice ensemble that has helped the franchise cross the $1.2 billion global box office mark:

  • Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog

  • Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails

  • Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna

  • Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog

The “Sonic CD” Connection

While specific plot details are being kept under "lock and key" at the newly formed Paramount-Warner studios, the set imagery and casting have fans pointing toward a specific source: the 1993 classic game Sonic CD.

In addition to Amy Rose, the third film's finale heavily hinted at the arrival of Metal Sonic, Dr. Robotnik’s robotic doppelgänger. Industry insiders suggest the fourth installment may delve into time travel elements—a core mechanic of Sonic CD—as Sonic and his friends attempt to prevent a "Bad Future" ruled by an automated Badnik army.

The Robotnik Question

The biggest variable remains the return of Jim Carrey. While Carrey famously un-retired for the third film, his involvement in Sonic 4 has not been officially confirmed. However, Carrey stated during the Sonic 3 press tour that he is "definitely open" to returning if the script "sounds fun," and his longtime assistant, Lee Majdoub (Agent Stone), is already rumored to be on the call sheet.

“I certainly love this crew, I love this gang that makes these movies, and I love the fans,” Carrey noted in a recent interview. “I think we’re all making this movie together.”

The Road to 2027

Paramount has locked in a release date of 19th March 2027, for the fourth outing. This marks the longest gap between entries in the franchise's history, a move likely intended to give the VFX team ample time to polish the increasingly complex character designs and action sequences.

As the "fastest franchise in Hollywood" begins its latest lap, the addition of Amy Rose and the potential of a Metal Sonic showdown suggest that Sonic 4 is aiming to be the most ambitious entry yet.
