Chris Brown Receives Suspended Sentence After Pleading Guilty to London Nightclub Bottle Attack

Chris Brown Receives Suspended Sentence After Pleading Guilty to London Nightclub Bottle Attack

American R&B singer Chris Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment after receiving an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, following a bottle attack at a London nightclub.

The 37-year-old musician appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, where he was sentenced after pleading guilty to affray regarding an altercation at Tape, a private members' club in Mayfair, Central London, in February 2023. His vocal coach, 40-year-old Omololu Akinlolu, admitted to the same charge and was also handed a suspended sentence.

Charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon against Brown were discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

The court heard details of the confrontation involving music producer Abraham "Abe" Diaw on February 19th, 2023. Prosecutors described how Brown approached Diaw on the dancefloor at around 3:00 a.m. holding a heavy, square-shaped glass tequila bottle.

During the 20-second incident captured on club CCTV, Brown struck Diaw twice over the head with the bottle before hitting his shoulder and attempting a fourth strike. Akinlolu grabbed the victim in a bear hug before Diaw fell to the floor, where he was kicked while seated defenceless.

Passing sentence, Judge Tony Baumgartner highlighted the severity of using a glass container as a weapon:

"The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, particularly when directed towards the head, was plainly dangerous. It carried the risk of causing significantly more serious injury than was ultimately sustained."

Prosecuting attorney Heidi Stonecliffe KC described the weapon used as a "heavy square shaped tequila bottle," while defence attorney Sallie Bennett-Jenkins KC offered an apology on behalf of the artist:

“This is an ugly and unattractive incident. It is, however, an incident which was very short-lived, lasting something more than 17 seconds but no more than 20. It is something which undoubtedly would have caused distress to those who are present and for which Mr Brown … offers a profound apology to all those present.”

Following the incident, Diaw was taken to St Mary's Hospital for treatment covering head and knee injuries. A subsequent MRI scan revealed a high-grade ligament injury on the inner side of his left knee.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police arrested Brown at the five-star Lowry Hotel in Manchester after he arrived in the UK on a private jet. Although initially held in custody, Brown was granted bail after providing a £5 million court security fee, enabling him to complete scheduled tour performances.

Addressing the conclusion of the case, Claire Campbell, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS London South, said:

“This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice.”

“This kind of violence is entirely unacceptable, and the Crown Prosecution Service will work tirelessly – with the police and partners across the criminal justice system – to pursue cases like this, and prove that no one is above the law.”
