China and U.S. Celebrate 45 Years of Diplomatic Ties: Leaders Express Optimism for the Future.
China's President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden exchanged warm congratulations on the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between their two nations, as reported by the Chinese foreign ministry on Monday.
In his message, President Xi highlighted the resilience of both countries in overcoming challenges, emphasizing the positive impact on their peoples' well-being and the global contributions to peace, stability, and prosperity.
The establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the U.S. was acknowledged by Xi as a pivotal event in the history of bilateral and international relations. Despite recent tensions, officials from both nations have engaged in efforts to rebuild communications and trust, culminating in a high-stakes summit between Xi and Biden in San Francisco last November. The summit, considered an opportunity to ease tensions between the world's two largest economies, provided a clear direction for future-oriented ties, according to Xi.
"I am willing to work with President Biden to continue to steer and navigate the China-U.S. relationship for the benefit of China and the U.S. and the two peoples, and to promote the cause of world peace and development," Xi stated.
Looking ahead to the new year, Xi exchanged New Year's messages with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, designating 2024 as a "friendship year" for both countries. The leaders expressed a commitment to deepening mutual trust, enhancing exchanges and cooperation, and contributing to regional peace and stability.
On New Year's Eve, President Xi also exchanged greetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Russia. Xi emphasized the need for continuous consolidation of ties, featuring permanent good-neighborly friendship and comprehensive strategic coordination.
In a separate statement, Xi reiterated that China's "reunification" with Taiwan is inevitable, emphasizing a stronger stance compared to the previous year. This comes as Taiwan prepares for a new leader in the upcoming presidential election.
As the world watches these diplomatic exchanges, the leaders express optimism for the future and a commitment to collaborative efforts in addressing global challenges and fostering mutual understanding.
