‘Meaning Beyond Revenge’: Brutal First Trailer for The Punisher: One Last Kill Debuts

BURBANK, CA — The skull is back, and this time, it’s personal. Marvel Studios set the internet ablaze on Thursday evening with the surprise drop of the first trailer for The Punisher: One Last Kill (trailer below). The project, officially titled A Marvel Television Special Presentation, marks the definitive solo return of Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The hour-long special is slated to premiere exclusively on Disney+ on 12th May 2026, strategically landing just one week after the high-stakes season finale of Daredevil: Born Again.

A Gritty, Standalone Vision

Unlike the sprawling, multi-episode arcs of previous MCU series, One Last Kill utilizes the "Special Presentation" format (previously seen in Werewolf by Night) to deliver a tight, R-rated-adjacent psychological thriller.

The trailer opens with a hauntingly quiet shot of a bearded, disheveled Frank Castle sitting in a darkened New York apartment, surrounded by relics of his past. The footage suggests a man struggling with severe PTSD, attempting to live a quiet life of isolation before a "young catalyst"—a girl in danger—forces him to wage war once again.

“Frank Castle has never needed an overbuilt mythology,” noted The Playlist in an early reaction. “The Special Presentation format suggests something tighter, meaner, and more direct than the usual franchise sprawl.”

The Creative Powerhouse

What has fans most excited isn't just Bernthal’s return, but his creative input. Bernthal co-wrote the script alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green (King Richard, We Own This City). This marks the first time an MCU lead has officially shared a writing credit on their own solo debut, signaling a "deeply personal" investment in the character's evolution.

Connecting the Dots

While the special appears to be a standalone character study, eagle-eyed fans noted several connections to the wider MCU:

  • Curtis is Back: The trailer confirms that Jason R. Moore will reprise his role as Curtis Hoyle, Frank’s loyal friend and moral compass from the original Netflix series.

  • The Born Again Link: Speculation is rife regarding the timeline. While Frank appeared in Daredevil: Born Again earlier this year, his disheveled appearance in the trailer suggests this story may bridge the gap between his escape from the Anti-Vigilante Task Force and his eventual clean-shaven return to New York.

  • The Big Screen Leap: The special serves as the perfect primer for this summer’s blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day (releasing 31st July 2026), where Bernthal is confirmed to appear alongside Tom Holland.

“One Last Kill”

The trailer concludes with a visceral montage of close-quarters combat, reminiscent of the legendary hallway fights that defined the character’s Netflix era, before fading to black on the iconic spray-painted skull.

“In this special, Frank is searching for meaning beyond revenge,” says the official Marvel synopsis. But if the trailer is any indication, finding that meaning will require a significant amount of ammunition.
