‘Heartbroken’: Breaking Bad Star and Disability Rights Advocate RJ Mitte Dies Aged 34
LOS ANGELES — Actor and campaigner RJ Mitte, best known for his breakthrough role as Walter White Jr in AMC's critically acclaimed crime drama Breaking Bad, has died at the age of 34.
The news was confirmed on Tuesday by his management team, who expressed "profound sadness" at the loss of the actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate. Local authorities and representatives confirmed that Mitte passed away at his home in Brownsville, Texas, on Monday afternoon.
"It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte," his representative stated. "He drew from his own experiences to bring authenticity and humanity to his work, while devoting his life to challenging stereotypes and advocating for performers with disabilities."
A Groundbreaking Television Legacy
Born Roy Frank Mitte III in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1992, Mitte was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age three. Moving to Los Angeles in 2006 to pursue acting, he landed the defining role of Walter "Flynn" White Jr in Vince Gilligan's Breaking Bad at just 15 years old.
Across all five seasons of the Emmy-winning series, Mitte portrayed the teenage son of Bryan Cranston's meth-making chemistry teacher Walter White. Like his character, Mitte lived with mild cerebral palsy, using the global platform of the show to offer a nuanced, realistic portrayal of disability that earned wide critical acclaim and a SAG Award alongside his fellow cast members in 2014.
Beyond Breaking Bad, Mitte featured in series such as Switched at Birth and The Guardians of Justice, as well as films including Triumph (2021) and The Oak Room (2020). He also served as a celebrity ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children's.
Castmates Lead Moving Tributes
News of Mitte's sudden passing sent shockwaves through the global entertainment industry, with former castmates and colleagues issuing emotional tributes to honor his memory.
Bryan Cranston expressed deep grief over the loss of his on-screen son, posting:
"I'm in deep despair as I write this tonight. RJ Mitte, my sweet son on Breaking Bad, has died... He never allowed his challenges to hold him back. I will miss you, son."
Co-star Aaron Paul shared his heartbreak in a statement to trade outlets, writing: "I am at a loss. I am heartbroken over this news. RJ, I love you my friend. You will be missed."
Dean Norris, who played DEA Agent Hank Schrader, added: "I am heartbroken. Though RJ didn't play my TV son, I always looked out for him as a young kid on set. He was a sweetheart of a young man and will be greatly missed."
A Champion for Inclusion
Throughout his career, Mitte consistently leveraged his visibility to push for greater representation and accessibility across film and television.
Mitte had been engaged to his long-time partner Kennedy Suarez since October 2025, with the proposal taking place during a benefit for United Cerebral Palsy.
