Box Office Disaster: ‘Minions & Monsters’ Set for Record-Low Franchise Opening in Historical Flop
LOS ANGELES — Illumination and Universal Pictures’ lucrative yellow icons are heading for an unprecedented reckoning. Minions & Monsters, the latest instalment in the multi-billion-pound Despicable Me universe, is on track to set box office history for all the wrong reasons as opening weekend projections point to a catastrophic franchise low.
Early tracking data from box office analysts indicates that the animated feature is aiming for a domestic opening weekend haul between $22 million and $28 million (£17 million – £22 million), a staggering collapse for an intellectual property that previously commanded guaranteed $100 million-plus debuts.
Should these estimates hold through its opening run, Minions & Monsters will officially unseat 2010’s original Despicable Me ($56.3 million) as the lowest-performing entry in the six-film saga, marking the first genuine commercial disaster for the hit-making studio.
A Dramatic Fall From Grace
The dire projections represent a swift turnaround for a franchise that has generated over $5 billion (£3.9 billion) globally across fifteen years.
Just two years ago, 2024’s Despicable Me 4 stormed to a colossal $122.5 million four-day Independence Day weekend debut, eventually grossing almost $1 billion worldwide. Prior to that, 2022's Minions: The Rise of Gru shattered Fourth of July records with a monumental $123 million launch.
By contrast, tracking for Minions & Monsters reveals severe brand fatigue and stiff competition in an overcrowded late-summer marketplace.
"We are seeing clear signs of audience exhaustion with the Minions formula," noted Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. "Illumination built an empire on near-bulletproof box office consistency, but releasing another spin-off so quickly without a compelling narrative hook appears to have pushed consumer tolerance past breaking point."
Weak Critical Reception and Stiff Competition
The commercial slump coincides with the worst critical reception in the franchise’s history.
Holding a dismal 34 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics have largely panned the film as a lazy, cash-grab effort that relies entirely on frantic slapstick rather than genuine story or character development.
Furthermore, Minions & Monsters faces fierce competition for family audiences. The animated spin-off is struggling to compete against the record-shattering theatrical run of Sony/Marvel's Spider-Man: Brand New Day, alongside held-over family audiences attending Pixar's summer offerings.

A Strategy Recalibration Ahead?
With a production budget reportedly hovering around $100 million (£78 million) before global marketing costs, Minions & Monsters faces an uphill battle to avoid heavy financial losses for Universal.
Universal and Illumination have not yet issued an official statement regarding the low projections, but trade analysts suggest the disappointing debut could force the studio to re-evaluate its reliance on rapid-fire spin-offs.
While the Minions remain powerful merchandise sales drivers globally, the box office stumble proves that even the industry's most reliable animated powerhouses are not entirely immune to audience fatigue.
