Bridge to the End: Avengers: Endgame Re-Release to Feature ‘Critical’ New Doomsday Footage
ST ANDREWS, SCOTLAND — In a move designed to tie the past of the Marvel Cinematic Universe directly to its future, filmmaker Joe Russo has confirmed that the upcoming re-release of Avengers: Endgame will feature entirely new footage. Speaking at the Sands Film Festival in St Andrews on Sunday, Russo revealed that these additions are "critically important" for setting up the events of the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday.
The re-release, scheduled to hit UK and global cinemas on 25th September 2026, is being framed by Marvel Studios as a "companion story" rather than a simple nostalgia trip.
The ‘Doomsday’ Bridge
While Endgame concluded the Infinity Saga in 2019, Joe Russo, who returns to the director’s chair alongside his brother Anthony for the next two Avengers films—explained that the studio is using this theatrical window to "enhance" the narrative.
“We’ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday story that we have added to Avengers: Endgame,” Russo told Deadline. “It’s an opportunity to create a bridge from Endgame to Doomsday in a very unique way. It’s a setup for what you’re going to watch in December.”
The announcement follows a seismic week for Marvel at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where the first trailer for Doomsday was unveiled to a standing ovation. The footage confirmed Robert Downey Jr.’s return as the iconic villain Doctor Doom, alongside Chris Evans, who appeared as a bearded Steve Rogers wielding Mjolnir.
A Multiversal Correction
Industry insiders suggest the new footage may revolve around the "Steve Rogers" timeline. In the original 2019 cut, Steve travels back in time to return the Infinity Stones and eventually retires with Peggy Carter. However, recent leaks from the Doomsday production hint that this timeline may have been "incursioned" by Doctor Doom, providing the narrative glue that brings a variant of Rogers back into the fight.
Marvel’s Autumn 2026 Roadmap
| Event | Date | Significance |
| Avengers: Endgame Re-Release | 25th September | Features new bridge footage for Doomsday. |
| New York Comic Con Preview | October | Expected second trailer for Doomsday. |
| The Fantastic Four: First Steps | November | Post-credits scene reportedly leads directly to Doomsday. |
| Avengers: Doomsday Release | 18th December | The first of the Russo Brothers’ two-part finale. |
The ‘Infinity Vision’ Launch
To celebrate the re-release, Disney is launching its new premium large-format certification, Infinity: Vision. The remastered Endgame will be the first title to carry the badge, promising enhanced contrast and audio specifications designed to rival the IMAX experience.
The focus on premium formats is partly a defensive move; Avengers: Doomsday is currently locked in a high-profile box office clash with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three, with both films currently scheduled for 18th December 2026.
Downey’s Accent and ‘Pulp’ Storytelling
Russo also touched upon the creative process of bringing Robert Downey Jr. back, noting that the actor had been discussing a return for over two years. He teased that Downey’s Doctor Doom will be a "complex, three-moves-ahead" character who sounds nothing like Tony Stark, a detail corroborated by CinemaCon attendees who described the villain as having a distinct, scarred accent.
“We’re leaning into serialized storytelling, like the comics,” Russo added. “This re-release is the first page of the new chapter.”
As the MCU enters its most ambitious phase yet, fans are already clamouring for tickets to the September re-release, eager to see how the "snap" that ended Thanos might have unwittingly paved the way for Doom.
